Cannabis is primarily a dioecious species, meaning male and female reproductive organs occur on separate plants. Male plants produce pollen, while female plants produce flowers that, when unfertilized, form seedless buds prized by growers. Although dioecy is the norm, cannabis can also display monoecious traits or hermaphroditism under stress. Breeders exploit dioecy to create feminized seeds and stable cultivars.
