I personally use a Gatorade bottle, other bottles too. But with the Gatorade bottle (quart size) drill a small hole right in the middle. When I want to water it I'll take a shot glass and water it through the same hole. It pools up there and drips slowly into the soil.
Also when planting seeds I make the hole with a toothpick or something similar in size, taproot down if it's showing, and only go twice as deep as the seed is wide, give or take a little.
After you make hole with tooth pick stick it In soil so you know right where the seed is.
