... best deal on a decent pH meter is on Amazon most likely,.. google it too, maybe some shop has a special,... but it's critical tool to have if you're in hydro! Until a proper pH is taken, it's guesswork,... as you see, in hydro, you are on the razors edge for general availability with several nutes, so it doesn't take much drift to start problems,...
Silica is actually meant more for hydro than soils, so don't worry about that nutrient conflict thing, I've seen that too, and it's a mistake,.. Potassium silicate is just fine, won't cross react when added to a nute solution-- (Red, I'm seeing that that around too, but it must be about some other form of Si),... the reason it's best for hydro is because (most) soils already have "native" Si in them,... it has many benefits, so stay on it; it does elevate pH, but is used in small amounts so it shouldn't be an issue,... pH drops will get you by, but the resolution is poor, so account for the +/- error when adjusting,... whatever is floating, it's not a precipitate, that would sink,...
