Grow Mediums Autopot Reservoir

Is it good practice to drain the reservoir before I add more nutrients or is it ok to keep topping up the reservoir with new nutrients

I always just topped the reservoir up with more mix. Every two weeks or so I let the res run low then gave everything a good rinsing out.
