Where are the Hockey fans at? My hockey fandom started way back in 1993 at the tender age of 11. I bought a used SEGA Genesis game NHLPA Hockey '93. I played the absolute hell out of that game and loved it. I dont know what caused me to pick my favorite team as the Chicago Blackhawks (dunno if it was the logo, the way the jerseys looked?) Chicago is nowhere near me but i still follow and cheer for them cause of that SEGA game.

I recently took the plunge and joined a B-League hockey team (no open ice hitting but checks are ok) I play as an offence defensemen. I can handle a puck, but i absolutely love to slide in and hip check somebody!

Anybody else love/play hockey? Who is YOUR team? What are your experiences?

I grew up in the southern US but still followed the game for the same reason you did - video games. Learned the game from that and watching TV and then taught myself to skate and play when I was in high school (just rec league stuff). I was not the fastest skater so usually ended up on defense, but had a great time doing it. Haven't played in decades now, but I occasionally go skating with my kids. My team is the Carolina Hurricanes!

I started watching Hockey Night In Canada every Saturday night in the mid 70's - back in those days, there was only one game featured and it always involved either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Montreal Canadians (and often against each other). CBC catered to the Ontario/Quebec population centeres - and one would have thought there were no other teams in the league, unless they happened to be playing either Montreal or Toronto - ha ha!

This was the era of the Canadian's icing a team that included Ken Dryden, Guy Lafleur, Yvonne Cournoyer, Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey - and they were perennial Saturday night winners - and I was their huge fan, even though I lived a country width away.

In the mid 80's, I realized my home province had a team (a local channel picked up a few of their games, every year) - and my allegiances switched - and I've been a Vancouver Canuck fan since (with all the disappointment and heart-break that has gone along with that - ha ha!).

I'm absolutely loving this new era of available broadcasts (as well as PVR and internet streaming) - and I haven't missed a game of the Canuck's 80-odd game regular season in 5 or 6 years.

I played a little organized hockey, as a kid (didn't every Canadian boy?) - and on the pond every winter it got cold enough to skate on - but hockey is an expensive sport for kids (who are constantly outgrowing their pads and skates!) to play - and my folks decided soccer would be a far less financially taxing sport for me to play growing up - ha ha!

Great to see I'm not the only fan on the board!

Watching the Olympics has renewed my interest in hockey. I started watching it around 1975 and living in NJ, quickly became a Rangers fan. I followed them faithfully and was over the top when they won the cup in 1994. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago. I always swore they would win the cup during my lifetime and they did. I had seasons tickets for 1 year back in the late 80s and even got to one to see one Rangers/Islanders playoff game, which happened to be John Davison's last game as a Ranger. I got to watch Mark Messier, perhaps the greatest captain/leader in any sport, and even the great Gretsky at the end of his career. Since moving to TN in 2002 I lost interest, mainly because there is almost no hockey on TV here. If I were closer to Nashville I'd probably be a Predators fan. I did play a little lake hockey when I was younger and at one point almost joined a league. The 3 a.m. ice time put me off of that. Watching the Olympics reminded me how much I enjoy and miss the game.

I remember that 1994 game 7 so well, Muddy - I nearly climbed out of my skin when the Canuck's Lafayette hit the post late in the third - ha ha!

That Ranger cup victory also established the tradition of a full fledged Vancouver riot when the Nucks lose game seven of the final!

Since i introduced my fiance to hockey ( shes a football fan) she loves it. I find football, baseball, golf to be painstakinly boring to watch or follow. Its all play by play...(play,stop,reset). Hockey is a 20 min period (granted penalties, offsides, icing) of non stop action. Offense can turn into defense at the slightest error passing, or a poke check.....fucking love hockey!

No only that game but the whole series was memorable. Stepon Mytoe scored some huge goals for the Rangers. Also the semi's against NJ. Messiers prediction in game 6 that the Rangers would win, then him going out and scoring a hat trick, cemented his place in NY Hockey legend.

The Carolina hurricanes are ok but I'm a Washington capitals fan!

The dreaded Caps! Our teams are opposite in that if we can make it into the playoffs, we always seem to catch fire and make a deep run. But in recent years we mostly seem to get behind in the standings early and then have to fight for our playoff lives all through the spring. The Capitals usually have a solid regular season, but then flame out of the playoffs in all sorts of interesting ways. With the realignment it's hard to say what the playoff picture will look like this year.

I gotta say my teams are the Leafs and Canucks . Grew up watching the leafs as they are always on TV in my area. OHL hockey is great to see in person or any CHL game, so much young talent.

Colorado has been great to watch the last few years, would love to see a home game and blaze 1!

Played organized hockey for the first time last year and had a blast. I grew up playing basketball during the hockey season as a kid because I blow at skating haha

:peace:
