In the quest for the best bang for my buck but also wanting to do it right from the start!
If i can save a buck here and there and still get the same results, that works for me.

My last grow many years ago i used a CMH bulb from Philips, the Philips HPS Retro White ED18 and had great results from it. When i stropped growing i gave all my gear away, except for my LED's.
My LED's were bought on the cheap back when they were just becoming semi affordable thanks to our Chinese friends. They produced bud but it was always sub par, very light and airy buds no matter the distance. Some strains worked well but for the most part they were a bust.
If anything i would use them for vegging and that is about it.

I am torn between the Sun Systems LEC, very expensive here in Canada and it will run about $900 for the 315W version.
When i look at it's spectrum it is very spiky and seems to cover the whole range.
This is it's spectrum chart:

Then in my quest to found something more reasonably priced i found this:
http://www.growlights.ca/growlights...tal-halide-cmh/315w-cmh-light-bulb-4000k.html

It's spectrum seems to be more full for lack of a better word. Been e mailing the company rep and they are custom made horticultural bulbs made specifically for them.

They look similar to my older CMH lamps i used to use except the base is different.

Looking at the spectrum charts i think i could do the whole grow with just the 4100K bulb.

Any thoughts or ideas on this? I am kind of set on going with CMH of some kind as i have used it very successfully in the past and only one light is another bonus. Bulbs are cheap though, so not a big deal.

I am looking at first growing 4 auto's in Hempy buckets in a 3X3 tent.
If that grow is successful i will be growing 2 strains of Photo's in the same tent with the same light and may add a SCRoG to it.

Once the bugs are sorted out i hope to finally grow my stored dragon Seeds!

I think the 4100k bulb is more on the blue spectrum

Let me try another way.
Here are the two systems lamps spectrum's.

Cheaper 315W Custom bulb

I have requested a clearer image for the cheaper spectrum but they could not provide me with one.

Both bulbs are 315W and 4100K.
I am thinking that the cheaper option will be just as good from the spectrum graphs.

This is the Philips HPS retro White spectrum bulb that i grew with previously.
Looks very similar to the one i am interested in.

You know..i have been playing around with the distance of the sun system 315, and I think my plants are leased stressed and stand up straiter when the distance is 30"+ from the top of the canopy. When they started flowering I brought it down to about 21" and they seemed to be stressed. I jacked it back up and next day live was good. It isn't a hot lamp by any means directly under it, but I think it's so dang bright that has something to do with it

I have bought the light and installed it and it looks GOOD!
So bright and crisp and it fills the tent very well!

Will start out with the 4100K bulb and switch to the 3000K for flowering.
I will be doing a Hempy style grow with 4 Auto's and will link this thread to the grow log.
The Auto's will be the lights first set of victims and them i will be trying 2 Photo's, Killing Fields and Sannie's jack will be grown.
The auto's will be SOG and i want to try ScroG for the Photo's.

@arpowre3 Thanks for the tips on height!

I use 3 Phillips argo 315, 3100k watters hung vertically in the middle of the room one on top one in the middle and one hanging below that. Naked bulbs so they can be a little dangerous. The plants are on the sides of the room, 3 levels of plants. Bottom, middle and top shelf, so that's why I have 3 lights. They do well in averticle set up since they provide 360° of light.

Just a little room 5x6 and 8 feet tall. But the way I grow it is 240 square feet since I use all of the height instead of growing on the ground.

The CMH lights, are kicking ass and taking names. I notice a lot more colors, better penetration and resin production is pretty stellar. Most of all the high is very intense. ;)

I've been using hps and mh bulbs and have been switching them out to cmh kits. I don't think I'll ever go back. This is my first run doing 100℅ cmh my last one was 66℅ cmh and it was very impressive.

The cmh light from Phillips 315 argo 3100k does a beautiful job growing seedlings too. They don't even lean to the light. They just grow up and out. Never had a light do so well for seedlings. Good luck with your cmh!

I run mine at 20" no stress. Make sure you are moving the air around with fans.

@SHRED uses 4200K for whole cycle and had around 1lb with 315w so you should be good with 4100k

This will help you choosing lightcolours:
