I posted this on the HID old school lights board that that one is not very active any more and most people are using Autocobs it seems, for some reason, like they are great lights. I figured this question will get more notice on BigsmO's board since most of you are probably ex HPS "users".

For you ex HPS users, can you say you have replaced older bulbs in lamps say during a flowering phase and you really noticed an improvement? I have some bulbs that I'm not certain were new when I bought them and probably had been used for sure. And I've put a lot of hours on them over the last 6 months. And I'm flowering some plants now, and thinking about replacing the bulbs and wondering if I'll notice an improvement.

My opinion was always if in doubt change the bulb. Even the higher end Hortilux HPS bulb is very affordable nowadays

Just my $0.02

You will notice a HUGE improvement. All i did was hps for the first 3 years of growing. Went from a 600 hortilux to a 1000w hortilux, to 2x 1000w hortilux.

I would say replace your bulb every 6 months. I have lasted longer and i didnt see terrible results but honestly if you want the most out of your nug, use new bulbs.

Edit: i did switch to autocobs but thats because i need to be as discrete as possible. No noise, virtually no heat (i want it semi warm for plant growth). @BigSm0 has been a great help with any questions or concerns you may have about the autocobs. 4 autocobs=600w hps. Or so they say. Im on my first run, so ill know more in a few months.

Every second cycle I replaced bulbs. I couldn't detect a difference, but my ladies could.

Only reason I'd hang another is just to buck the local law that says I can't grow "pot" with hps. Regulation specifically targets cannabis. So growing tomatoes indoor, under hps fine.

Am so sick of uninformed people regulating things they know nothing about.

I always changed my bulbs regularly. I did 4 month intervals though. As mobo said when in doubt change them. I also haven’t seen one person selling used equipment that said used for more than a grow so that tells me a lot of people at lying.

I bought new ones today. Installed. Will have to see if I notice any improvements with flowering two ladies that are hung up in preflower. Also don't forget I have the autocobs on too so it might mask what I see with new HPS bulbs. Hoping I wake up tomorrow and find lots of colas!
