Hi, im doing my first grow and i have an ant infestation in one of my pots. how can I get rid of them? is there any product I can buy or does cinnamon really do the trick? thanks
Just get some ant gel mate. Look for the ones that says destroys nest. 1 well placed drop and the nest will be gone in a week. The ant eats it then dies in the nest so a dozen ants eat the dead body to dispose of it....process repeats until they’re all dead. Can’t remember the active ingredient to look for but any of the brand name makes should be fine.
Doesn’t need to be in the pot mate. The nest isn’t in the pot so just follow them and see where they’re coming from and bait that area. Cinnamon won’t do anything though, Probably attract more of them lol. Just make sure there’s no cats/dogs or anything else gonna eat it.
...mates, I think it's boric acid that's in the baits,... but that's a slow solution. Fastest thing to do is to drown the little shites, basically a brief total immersion of the pot, but you'll need a wetting agent for it to work well; this is what cuts through their natural water repellency and drowns them quickly.... they are likely trying to establish a nest in the pot, as it's often a very nice place for it.. warm, moist, dark,...
Cinnamon will repel them on the surface maybe, but by no means affect the ones deeper in the pot,...
When they move in on a pot on me, I dunk it just enough to submerge the top level, and let it sit for a several minutes, remove and let drain,... top the soil off if necessary...
Oh aye just minded, had to go find my bottle cos couldnt mind what the active was. "Fipronil" is the ingredient to look for in the ant stuff. That's the stuff that destroys the nest in 1 contact. Used to be a pest controller and it's awesome gear. Bout 20 quid for a 20ml bottle of the stuff i use (formidor) but anything containing fipronil should in theory do the job just as well and there's plenty cheaper versions. Couple drops anywhere in the ants path and you'll never see them again. Week to kill the nest but they'll stop bothering you after a few days cos they'll be too busy eating all the dead ants in the nest to look for food. Mwahahaha death by cannibalism what a way to go.
No idea about soil growing tbh but I'm sure @archie gemmill could answer the last post if we ask him nicely.
