First off...this site rocks..great info for noob's like me..Lol.

Here is my question..after some research here I have decided to try my first ever grow...but before I pop my grow cherry I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row so to speak... Below is my setup that I have been picking away with over the last month..looking for a second set of eyes on my setup and or anything else that I need..

Here is what I have so far:

1. 2'x2'x4' grow tent Myler
2. 1-4" carbon filter and 4" duct fan with speed controller (165 CFM)
3. 400W digital ballast
4. One 400W HPS and One 400W MH bulb and reflector.
5. 4 auto feminized seeds from pure seeds..named pure THC.

This is going to be a small stealth grow...my major concern is smell..

I will be using local hardware store soil and nutrients as that is all I have access to at the moment.

I plan on a 18/6 light cycle through out..
Any tips or wisdom is much appreciated... Please let me know if I have missed anything in my setup..thank you for reading..

Add perlite to your soil for drainage and then fill your pots. Water through with pH 6.3 water and test runoff. If runoff pH is low, add dolomite lime at 1/4 cup per 5g of soil. Mix that in thoroughly, re-fill a pot, water with pH 6.3 water, then let it "cook" for two weeks.

The biggest stumbling block to newbies is pH, you want to fill pots and adjust pH before you put seed to soil. If that is spot-on at 6.3, your grow will run itself. If your pH is whack, you will be fighting your plants the whole time.

hi tracy:howdy:great to see you've decided to take the leap and start your own grow. you've put a bit of thought into it and that should stand to you. smell shouldnt be too much of an issue as you seem to have that covered with the carbon filter. my only concern for you is heat. 400w of hps in a small tent is gonna get hot, you def need to get a circulation fan in there. also if you can somehow manage to get nutes specifically for cannabis it would be a help. best of luck with the grow , we'll keep an eye out for you, any problems just ask. theres always someone here with the answer:smokebuds:

Hi Tracy, Welcome to AFN :smokebuds:

Set up looks good, I think the 4 inch filter should do good in that space. Speed controller good,.Where are you venting to?

Also noticed the 400w MH may get warm, You could maybe start with a T5 or CFL, then go HPS.

What size pots? And make the best soil you can with what you can get.

Good luck:gthumb:

Thank you everyone for the replies..

low_and_slow: Thank you for the heads up on PH...I have more reading/research to do here...but I just ordered a 4-1 soil PH meter from eBay...should have it early next week..

I forgot to mention that the ballast is dimmable 50%-75%-100%. I was hoping to run at 50% to minimize heat. I still have to get a clip on fan...I was hoping and fingers crossed that between the fan and 50% ballast I could minimize my heat??

I also plan on germinating straight in soil in 3L pots...???

Looks like I have more reading to do...Lol...I can't wait to get started..but I don't mind waiting another week until I get my fan and pH meter...

Again than you everyone.

Good luck with your setup !!

Hey tracy with your carbon filter 1-4' you should be riding nice and stealthy IMO,
as long as your plants dont get outta hand, I'm growing 2 plants at the moment with the same filter, I havent used it as of yet,
Plants are still in the early stages, but i will definitely give you heads up once I notice a odor.
Looking forward to see your grow!

Welcome to the New Growers Forum. Shoot over to the Intros and let everyone else know you're here. :D Glad to have you by the way.

I too am concerned on the heat from that many watts in that small a space, but you won't know until you try. Set it all up and do a mock run with everything going like it would with plants, just with no plants and monitor your temps and all before you put anything in. I would read and learn as much as possible before going straight in. Not that that won't work and that I wouldn't help you the whole entire way, because anyone hear will tell you that I will do that for sure. BUT...it's just better all the way around IMO. Knowledge is power.

Look for Promix BX or HP at your hardware store, they carry it sometimes. Monrovia Organics(the Blue bag) works pretty good too, but you'll need some dolomite lime and perlite to mix in that. :D
Look for Shultz organic nutes. Small bottle green liquid, and cheap. Works fairly well, just keep in mind you aren't likely to get top notch results without proper grow nutes. :D

good luck....also several ebayers will sell you fox farms trio and other high quality nutrients that others here would recommend in small bottles for cheap. 2-4 ounces of each will last months with just a couple plants

Thanks everyone for the nutrients advice..I just ordered the 'NEW Micro Grow Bloom Base Fertlilizer Package PH Perfect"..just the small 1L kit..
