Greets - In my pot of soil there are several very small white worms called fruit gnat larvae. Does anyone know how to rid soil of these pests? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. :tiphat:
Hey man, I just had a case of fungus gnats. Here is what I did:
Yellow sticky cards and mosquito dunks. Ordered from amazon...pretty cheap I think about 15.00 total. I had some neem oil on hand and sprayed the top of the soil and around the cabinet, that slowed them way off until my cards and dunks arrived. After treating with this, I put a layer of perlite on top of the soil so they'd not be able to land. Worked like a charm. No gnats since the dunks. Good luck to you man. I think the fix is pretty easy for this issue.
Thanks for the reply! My problem is with fungus gnat larvae that haven't matured into gnats yet. Your suggestion is a good one if these wormy things become gnats.
I'm using the exact same soil as you (roots organic) so there might have been fungus gnat eggs in the soil when I bought the bag as I keep the grow area really clean.
When I googled fungus gnat larvae I came across an article written by someone with fungus gnat larvae. This person said to take a clothing iron, fill it with water, and steam these little creepy crawlies to death. I just tried that and it seems to have worked! I tried to shield the plant from the hot steam as best I could, but 2 fan leaves near the bottom of the plant curled up and are probably history. But the rest of the plant looks fine.
Thanks for all of the links! I see that someone used sand. I've heard of this method but thought I'd try the steam iron method first as I have an iron handy.
I hope that the fungus gnat larvae don't return, but I'm ready if they do. Thanks again for the help! :tiphat:

Here's a link to the "steam cleaning method" for getting rid of fungus gnat larvae:
Seems that roots organic soil and fungus gnats are an issue from what I've read. I still have a bag left, so next grow, I will treat the soil prior to potting! Not enough money laying around to just throw it away!
I still have a bag of this soil left also. It's been good soil up until these wormy things appeared. I'll probably microwave the soil before my next grow! "Stirring"
