New grower here gathering supplies and preparing for my first grow. Ive been reading up for months here and feeling excited to finally get the ball rolling. Im moving back into my condo the end of the month and in the basement I already have a small room in mind. Iirc the room is roughly 4' wide and about 8' long at the side but it is under stairs so the ceiling is slanted. I know the room provides plenty of space for my intended 4-5 plants at a time, my first(of many) questions is if I should make a box or not. Light doesnt escape and im not worried about the smell more wondering if a smaller box would be easier to control/maintain vs a walk in closet size room.

I ordered 10x northern lights auto fem from herbies and a 700w mars II. Planning on something similar to the beginner lowes soil and fert and tossing around buying a 6 pack of air pots. Hows this for a start and what else do I need to order now so ill have it before I move? Im hoping for simple but likely upgrading quickly as I get a little experience (seems to be a habit with hobbies)

999, good to have you here in AFNland. Nice intro. I think a good idea would be to start a journal in the new growers section where you can list out your intentions and get some comments there, and then the grow can pan out with questions along the way.
You will love your new hobby and the reward at the end is free meds that you can call your own.

Hello BRICH and welcome to AFN! Anything you need, let me know. I do have a suggestion for something you will need. A good PH pen!! HM digital 200 is a great pen and will not break the bank! Also, try to stay away from soils that have nutrients in them already and NO Miracle Grow!! Bad for canna plants! Yes, you will need to pick a nutrient line too. That should get you sorted. When you get ready to roll, throw up a journal, so we can all join you and see what you have going on!

Welcome to the AFN community Birch, you seem to have a great start and panning is key to sucsess in my opinion. To answer your question about your space whether or not to build a box, if the space under the stairs is adquate and you can vent it properly to keep the temps in check I would go with that vs building a box.

Something that has helped me this go round in my setup and design is not having my seeds yet so the only thing I could do is get my environment right. Meaning set everything up before you put your plants in and check all the enviromental variables like Temp, Relative Humidity and Air flow.

Other than that, as stated above start a grow journal and ask questions you will get great people helping you with any questions you have. I would say go ahead and start your journal now and ask lots of questions about room setup and design in order to maximize your results. In addition to the HM digital pH 200 for measuring the pH of your water and solutions, I would recommend a Control Wizard Accurate 8 to measure the pH and moisture of your soil. Start a journal in new grower section. Include as much detail as possible on your intentions and conditions through out your grow. Angles will appear to help you to make your endeavor successful.
