Hi all, need some help or advice...been growing over 2 years now, doing the same method, never any problems with germination, but recently, the last 2 grow attempts have been really bad, and I have no idea why. Almost every seed either dies during germination or they rise above the soil but then die due to the seed being absolutely stuck on. Using all Mephisto seeds recently. I have had many times in the past where she has opened up but the shell is stuck on the leaves - that's not what I'm talking about. I mean the shell is so stuck on, like it's glued shut, it prevents the leaves from opening up and she dies. Pics should help explain.

Usual method is soak in filtered water until they sink, then plant them in the soil. Perhaps I'm planting too shallow? But I don't think thats the case...

Can't have this keep happening, I'm only trying to get 3 plants going and so far have been through over 10 seeds! Only 2 have germinated successfully.

Cheers all!

Get a spray bottle and spray water on shell wait a minute then take tooth pick to get shell off. But one thing no one thinks about is taproot usually comes out then down to make a U shape. As it works its way up the shell comes off. So next time when put in soil lay sideways. Gravity will straighten her out and shell will come off in dirt.

Also the pic you have there needs the shell removed by hand and planted carefully with leaves a touch above soil. Taproot is way to long leaves have already formed.

Hey there
I’m Noob grower
I recognise some good advice in above posts

When do you add light?

Ive noticed stems bend towards light - even before seed has opened enough to expose any green

And I’m also having occasional problem with seed case not wanting to open

So I’m testing theory of keeping them in dark place
(on heatpad in small coir starter pots with domes)
until seed and membrane are completely off

And only using light (my 40w cfl spiral) after that stage has has fully finished

I’m thinking using light too early - maybe isn’t good

Only done a couple of times so far
..seems it might work..
But it’s difficult to tell with so many unknowns

I guess I’ll just have to keep on trying things
lol

I use light as soon as it's out of the ground, just a nice safe distance. CFL you can put within a few inches.
