Grow Mediums How do you start seeds?

Looking to improve my seed starting. I have been getting a lot of brown roots early on so something needs to change. So this is what I have been doing after seed germs in paper towel for a few days it goes into root riot plug then I put it in my ez cloner for about a week then goes into the net pot with the clay rocks to the 5 gallon dwc bucket. Now my first thought was something was wrong after the final transplant to dwc cause that's when I start seeing issues but I just did one of these and left it in the ez cloner longer then normal and light brown roots showed up. Now I get good plant and root growth in the cloner setup but the root riot plug gets soaked and the light is right above so am I setting my self up for root slime off the bat?
