Since there is a lot of new innovations on the LED front I am going to be back in Colorado next month to start my lifes dream and project of epic proportions. But We are going to be living off the grid, we are going to have solar power, wind and natural gas. So give the fact that I am not on the grid I am trying to decide what lights I am going to use to save the most power. It has seemed to me that the LED's are now just as more if not more W that the HID's. So is there anything out there that is comparable in lumen output to a 1000k HPS or MH bulb on the market and out of the two which would be ideal for my situation? Thanks for any feedback

The thing I noticed is that they are just as W hungry as others like HID. But they are trying to drive a lot. My grows right now are just using two old 60w Hans Panels. I just keep the led close to the canopy. Then again it is per plant.
My lesson learned is to just keep the LED no more than 12 inches from the canopy.

That being said....check out the reflector look line from MarsHydro. Keeps it down around 400-500 watts equivalent to a 1000watt in power.

Check my logs for the results.

Peace

Hi Derek,
It all depends on your growroom size.
If you grow big, there's nothing better than a 1000w DE system.
Leds have a higher initial cost and not many led products exceed the output of a hps bulb. There are new designs based on cob led technology which put out impressive light but their application is different to hps because of intensity. Leds need to stay closer to plants because of lower intensity they put out.
It would be very helpful if you gave us info on your grow area.

Cheers

i just bought my first led man,tbh im well impressed with it to date very very bright indeed :hookah: i might even get another 1 and do away with my hid altogether !!! but i aint flowered out the plants yet ? so have a peek at my diaries it might put your mind @ rest.good luck in the outback :pass:

Thanks everyone for your input, My situation is going to be slightly unique because I am going to do something that I have never done before or heard of anyone doing. I am going to be using the LED's and using sunlight. I am going to have the sun do its sun thing during the day and at night I am going to run my lighting. So I am not as worried I guess about lumen penetration, I am not necessarily worried about trying to maximize my use of the LEDS to grow but more so to give them something during the night hours. I found with my autoxtreme DWC grow that autos can be grown very well with 24 hours of light start to finish.

So My plan is to have a 20'x20' greenhouse and I am going to be using instead of 5 gallon buckets I am going to use either 7 or 10 gallon trash cans :) I intend to grow some MONSTERS. I have never done greenhouse/hydro and I have never hear of anyone doing it so I am pretty excited to see what I have in my head come to fruition.

So the sun will be your main light and you only need supplemental light for the night hours? Growing autos or photos? Maybe to get non stop light or to prevent early flowering in photos..?

He is doing autos, he spoke about how well his auto in DWC worked under 24 hours so he is going to try to replicate that in the greenhouse

Kind of strange practice because of alternating spectrums.
I think you dont need 24/0 when growing under the sun, also the benefits of 24/0 over 20/4 or 18/6 are probably not so great with autos.
For sure will be interesting to see the progress of this grow operation.
"Dwc and greenhouse" makes me think of trees.

I know that the benefits of doing so may be minimal but I take any increase in yield I can lol And to the contrary I think the alternating spectrums of light will do nothing but help( I could be wrong though) and you are correct I too am thinking of trees, auto trees to be exact. On the Dutch Passion website they have a picture of some AutoXtremes that were grown in a greenhouse and they were pretty dang big and I want mine to get about twice as big as those. I am ultimately trying to stay within the legal limits of the law in Colorado which states you can grow 6 flowering plants and 6 immature plants. They do not say how big those plants can be :)
