If the industry isn't proactive in developing standards there's a real danger that legislators and regulators with little or no knowledge will do it. Take a look at the range of conditions different medical marijuana states allow to be treated with cannabis. It's obvious that the people who make the rules, as a whole, are pitifully ignorant and grossly biased. They should just shut up and let the doctors decide but that's not in their nature.

Too many people in positions of authority can't or won't discriminate between facts and opinions. Too many of them have their own opinions and don't want to be confused by the facts. Unfortunately many people on our side of the fence act the same. They don't do the cause any good.

That makes it not only desirable but necessary to establish reliable standards for the industry. Honesty, responsibility and credibility are some of our best weapons against the radical prohibitionist crowd.
