:2cents:Lately there have been a lot of comments on breeders devulging there cross strains they used to develope one of there hybrids.I beleve that is up to the breeders to do it if they want.If you want to call it a secret then so be it.I spent a little time in a horticulture school many years ago and I was in charge of the greenhouse and the propigating of the different flowers that we grew.I worked with roses, mums, and a few other flowers and most if not all the different strains of roses and etc had a legal patent so no one could copy there hybrids. The practice of not divulging breeding info goes back many years and is nothing knew.Same goes for apple and fruit trees that the university of horticultue in my state has developed. It is common practice to apply for a pattent for everything they develope.Marijuana breeding is somewhat knew so I guess they can't get patents on a mostly illegal plant, but maybe that day will come in the future. In the mean time let the breeders do there own thing and leave it up to them to give out breeding info if they so choose and just be glad that we have MJ breeders that want to better the plant and develope there own knew strains that we all can enjoy.:D

Im not sure I agree there was a good example with mossy where the breeder did not reference her hard work and some breeders just f1 2 established strains and claim kudos on it doing very little actual work

I am working on a strain I made myself at the moment....and when I am ready to post my results on it, I have no intention of conceiling the heritage....sure others can make the same cross....but the HARD WORK is growing the many seeds and plants needed to find a good breeding pheno and then consistently breeding them together, choosing for desired traits, noticing and culling undesired traits and then stabilising the strain....this is the true hard work of breeders...
I have noticed a lot of strains are bought...then someone will make their own version of the strain and call it theirs...an example off the top of my head is sweettooth....a few different breeders seem to now be offering their own version of swtth....yet ultimately they all seem based on the original version that came out.....cannot think of anyone that has gone back and made a sweettooth from the same original crosses sweettooth was originally made from.

autoflowers are the worse for this how many are crossed with low ryder and never mentioned lol
subcool for example f1s all of his strains with his chosen parent with other strains I don't actually see much line breeding but he seems to get decent reviews
F1's are normally stable but if you try and copy those genetics by selfing they are pretty much all over as you have no access to the parents

YES!
don, I SOOO agree with you there....too many strains are being offered that are to my mind, akin to GM crops....they are marketed and sold but will not or cannot breed true, thus being a repeat market...a captive market...I am NOT a great fan of this....

I have intentions of taking my strain to gen10 before releasing it [I hope] to the market.....yes, I would like to make a little $$ from this strain and my efforts....but have no intention to even try to make a 'killing' on the market from it...if I can finalise it and bring out a distinct strainline that BREEDS TRUE....I feel I will have achieved my aims and any who purchase some would be able to make more by breeding them with each other and get offspring the SAME as the parents....
My research indicates the magic generation for 'stability' is generation7....though I feel for it to be rock solid 10 gens must be grown to be sure.

I think breeder's and thier genetics deserve reasonable respect. I think they should be given the chance to be asked, if thier genetics are going to be used. I think if you gave the breeder that respect, usually they will consent.

It may be true that people make easy crosses. But it is equally true that breeder's spend many years just to re-create one trait in a pheno.

If you made a product that contained ketchup, and found that Hienz ketchup is the one you wanted to use. You would have to ask permission to use heinz, and probably pay a fee.

Just my two cents.

I dont think you should have to ask to breed with some one elses plant or pay a fee but the end product should be distinctly different and credit made

Also knowing the genetic tree may give you a clue on what the plants like as far as condtions growth and flavor wise
