ok so Iv seen the answer to this question all over the place, and its varried it seems,I am starting up an led grow in the next few days, just put everything together, will be using a 90watt led ufo light, "usa made"....in a GL40 tent, only thing Im not sure of is the distance I should have the light away from the tops of plants? 12" 6"??? someone please help! lol...anyone using or had sucess using 90 ufo type lights, how far was ur lights away from plants? thanks for any help!

Iv seen people grow with 90w ufo's just a few inches from the canopy it all depends on intensity and stuff, you just really don't know with LEDs as they vary so much my LEDs would be at around 14" at closes most 24+ but when you change that to a 90w UFO you should be safe to be under 10" away.... I'd personally find what distance from the light your plants start to stretch and keep it a few inches under that you could get closer but the larger footprint would probably be a bigger benefit.... Also you can keep your lights closer in flower than you can in veg or seedling stage just incase you didn't know already

thanks dude.that helps alot! thats mainly the thing i was wondering about the most as im starting up soon n wasent sure where to start.maybe in seedling stage have it 18-24" away to make sure its not to much and the lower the light when it seems like its starting to grow nice...im not new to growing.just leds lol...iv seen alot of damn nice grows done with led.they also seem like the speed up the grow a little? colors also seem to stick out more in buds iv seen...i decided to try one..its fairly cheap n perfect fit for the gl40

Your plant will tell you if your lights are to far away at the start if its stretches,I would start at 60-45cm then veg and flower at 30cm....you may be able to get closer.

If your light draws 90W and has good lens, I would start with 60cm and see. Or maybe even a little bit lower.

If your light draws 90W and has older lens, where diods are spread around, you will see some early stretch in the beginning at 60 cm. These lights do not have so potent penetration and spread light all around, so they need to be lower, at 40 cm maybe but that really depends on lens.

And if your light is declared as 90W, but draws 50W real power, then these distances will be much shorter, especially with older lenses.

If you put your light too close, you will see leaves curling and plant will stay close to soil surface. If light is too far, then it will stretch from the very first day, it will just grow up and then fall under its own weight.

If you take some pictures and publish them here daily or whenever something changes, you will be on the safe site, because you will be guided.

People here enjoy nice grows very much and are always ready to help someone to make one.

Good Luck!

oooooh pick me pick me! I am running a mars 2 900w, which is the same thing just a few less diodes. Manufacturers info said 3-3.5 feet...i hung mine at 3 feet...and then decided to try 2 feet/60cm. Thats where its at at the moment 2 feet/60cm been there for days good growth and no burning. My plants are still seedlings some of them a tiny babies, check my sig for more info.

thanks everyone! big help, thanks for replys! i kinda figured just because im only using a 90watt that i could get it some what closer, think the lights around 18-24" now,but cnt realy tell untill i get the pots in there ect,i did start a log on here, was just waiting for seeds to crack and they did:)

I figured because I'm only using a 90watt that I could get it somewhat closer, think it's around 18-24" now,

I recently began using two Blackstar 180w v2 (118w actual draw) in a 4'x2'x4 tall tent. One light is "HO" (veg), the other is "UV" (flower/full-spectrum). The lights are 8"-10" away from top of plants.

The plant in flower (which was vegged under t5ho) seems happy with that height. The plant in veg (begun under LED) shows a little curl along the edge of the leaves. I should move the light to 14" but my tent is only 4' tall. I'm worried this veg'ing plant will stretch more than one grown under t5ho, so I'm erring on the side of stress until I see how this plant finishes. Maybe I should LST the plant (bend the main stem down) to manage its height/stretch.
