I have a theory about light distance and plant growth. This theory pertains to the field of epigenetics. Epigenetics is, in its most basic concept, the idea that external influences can and do impact internal genetic expression. Think of switching to flowering nutrients to halt growth and produce buds, or light cycles to change from veg to flower.

So, after having performed no tests, I hypothesis that you can trick a seedling into thinking it has grown taller than it really has by slowly lowering the light towards it. This could potentially induce closer node spacing. My hypothesis is based on the observation that plants will stretch to get closer to distant/weak light sources and you can stunt the stretching by lowering the light. In this way, if we slowly lower the light, so as not to induce stress or damage to the plant and to allow the plants systems to react and send chemical signals, perhaps we can reduce vertical growth faster and induce tighter node spacing. On the other hand, in terms of autoflowers, perhaps this could induce flowering earlier? Or perhaps it will just induce node creation faster and the response to flowering is a timed event as opposed to a proximity event. Maybe this has already been done.

I don't have the space for this kind of experiment but I'll be doing it anyway, without any control groups or variable isolation so no really data will be formed but I'll be interested none the less.

As with all good research... one should do research before pursuing an Idea... I didn't do any so who knows maybe it's already out there... I want those tight nodes on my sativa grows!

The ruderalis genetics were found in Russia if I remember correctly and the reson the automatically flower at such an early age is due to such a short amount of time to flower. I like your hypothesis but I don't think that height of a plant would be a factor in flowering time. Atleast for regular autos, super autos I have no idea about so I will not make false claims. I've had autos flower just after 13 days! That is tremendously fast... I mean it's not even on its 4th node and already sexually mature.

I'm in no way sayin you're wrong. Just saying that you have a very short amount of time to test it out before they flower. Maybe you could atleast cut a certain amount of days.

Length between nodes is a growth hormone regulated event. The hormone is destroyed by light and blue frequencies more so than red. This is not a feed back event no cyclic amp, no kinase just a growth hormone whose half life is light dependent. So more light --growth hormone burns up---less light growth hormone builds up, effects cell elongation in stem cells.

Right. That's why they'll stretch less if you run them 24/0 for the first few weeks. Several growers do this to keep nodes tight. They'll stretch more in the dark than light. :D
Think about Photo plants when you switch to 12/12. Boom. :D

Good info! I actually already knew that... :joint: Had one to the head when I stream of conscioused that one. I'll still slowly lower to the 18" closest distance to seedlings over time (first auto, kind of scared of light damage) as the gradual increase in light will still increase the break down of the hormone (theoretically). Using a BS 240 led by the way. Anyway I won't be recording any data here, check my sig for the grow log, as nothing conclusive will be determined from this experiment with no controls. Thanks for the info! And yeah height isn't a factor for flowering it is nutrients and light cycles (or in the case of ruderalis and thus most autos, if not all, time nad/or nutes).

Whats the best height to have T5's above seedlings?
I'm a week in on 2 and have my lights 5-6 inch above them, they seem to be doing just fine and on second set of leaves. Plan to raise as they grow in their coming spurt.
