Photography Lighting with softbox, umbrella, speedlights and backdrops

I do tons of car photography.....

Nice lighting on that. I'm a total newbie. But I see how it could become something to spend a lifetime doing. No shortage of ways to shoot them.

@LittleMT

I setup the muslin backdrop and softboxes and started to shoot with a basic clamshell. I look lots of pictures. Some I'm happy with, but to be expected being a newbie they are pretty rough. I find I'm lacking sharpness. I short this on aperture priority I think using F18 for more depth. Does this look like its lacking in sharpness?

Yes it is lacking sharpness..... If you go f18 you will have more depth of field but this also cuts back how much light is hitting the sensor. I would probably shoot from a tripod as you will have to use a slow shutter speed (which can lead to unsharp images) to compensate for the light loss of f18. Also I would use a timer or a 2-4 second delay before the shutter fires. This helps eliminate 'camera shake', which can happen simply from the up and down motion of clicking the shutter.

Even though the image isn't sharp, that's a nice plant!

I did this one this morning at f5. 4 stops above the lowest f stop for the lens. Its sharper. I don't think I need f18 to get deep depth for plants from what I'm seeing. at f5 shutter speed is about a half second I think.

I do use a tripod. But that camera shake is probably happening so I'll put a delay on for tripod shots.

I also found I get better sharpness by moving the lights and tripod closer to the subject.

Its better this morning I think after these changes.

That is better, sometimes its the optics, some lenses are sharper then others. In this shot I used a Voigtlander Macro APO-LANTHAR 110mm F/2.5 Lens, shot at f/22, ISO400, 1/20sec on a tripod. This lens is a RAZOR. Bitting sharpness. Shot with a Sony A7R II 42MP full frame.

Nice lens. Pricey. Do you use Sony exclusively? Razor is a good word for that. Is that Sweet Seeds purple genetics?

The lens I used was a Nikon D80 kit lens. I want to try my 50mm prime soon. And my dad has some sort of higher end Nikkor telephoto VR lense in his bag that I can use too but not sure its going be useful for my canna shooting.

Yes I use Sony exclusively. Prior to that I shot Olympus and Canon. I think you will find the 50mm prime sharper then the kit lens.

Red Posion is from Sweet Seeds Red family...…..but they are heavy in purples.... My next grow will be a Bloody Skunk which is also from the Sweet Seeds Red family...
