i am ready to start looking at the trichs. I have seen a few cheap loupes on amazon will they do the trick?
is a 40x enough?

At least 60x or better 100x. I have 100x and see clearly, maybe 60x is the minimum.

40 is ok if you have great eyesight.60-100 can be picked up on auction sites for £3 lil silver thing with leds and a uv banknote checker.

I have a 60x-100x and I never take it past 60x. It's clear as day with these blind eyes!

Get the adjustable/focusable microscope, not a loupe, which is just a unadjustable little magnifying glass. For example, see http://www.ebay.com/itm/60x-Handhel...er-Magnifier-LED-Light-Trendy-J-/201613341025 for only $1.85 on Ebay. [It's incredible how for that price, you get not just the microscope, but 3 button-type batteries and delivery from China. Locally, just a single one of the batteries cost that much or more].
