Hi!

When adding worm castings at 30% to super soil enriched soil, should I be adding some perlite? I’m assuming, yes. Anyone have a good ratio?

TIA,

Scrib

I add perlite to all my plants as it helps with drainage and soil compacting. Both those (lack of drainage and compacted soil) can cause trouble for your plants if they occur later in the grow.

Thanks Seymour.

I’m using roots original which already has perlite. It’s a pretty fluffy mix so I’m worried about adding too much perlite. I don’t want to be forced to water more than every other day.

I plan on doing the mephisto super soil recipe from their grow guide, more or less. I’ll be mixing in the worm castings and amending half of the resulting product to do the super soil on bottom, roots original and castings up top. I’m just not sure how much perlite to add. I’m hoping someone has done something similar with some recommendations.

I used Fox Farms Ocean Forest, which has some perlite in it. I always amended the FFOF with an additional 20% (by volume) of perlite. As for extra watering, thats something only you can answer as for me, time spent in the garden helps make the world right.

1.5 cubic feet of roots organic soil / four quarts of worm castings / four quarts of rinsed perlite. That’s how I mix mine

Agreed, I love spending time in my garden too! I also like being able to leave for the weekend without having someone tend to my plants too though. :smokeit:

Sounds like a good blend, easy to remember too, thanks milo!

Did some pondering while ripping the bong....

I like to over analyze things sometimes, so, you’re using 10% worm blended in, if my math is correct? Have you tried going higher?

I guess what I was really asking in the beginning was how much perlite to add to worm casting when amending soil. Sounds like 50/50 works. Sorry, off on too many tangents...

I would use the 50/50 blend. I haven’t used more, that’s just what I had on hand last time I potted.
