I got some molasses in the mail a couple days ago and when I went to use it, I discovered it's really watery. I was expecting thick molasses that had to be thinned in hot water. Did I get watered down molasses and does anyone have any experience with this??? Also, since it's watery, I wonder how much of it I should use??? Thanks in advance!!!

Watery? never seen that. Must be industrial grade. Check if it's sulphured or unsulphured.
Should be ok, except if brewing beneficial bacteria. Sulphur is no good for bennies.

It's advertised as unsulphured, but it's as thin as water!

I guess I was trying to save money by buying in bulk.

"Feed Grade" molasses is more or less the crap at the end of the sugar refining mill. That is why it's "feed grade" for horses, cows and other livestock. Most of the sugar has been refined out of it. I don't recall as a kid how thick it was when mixing it with grain for my horses but I surely don't remember it being watery just remember it tasted not so good. Granted it's been 25 yrs now.

Hell yeah, now that makes since!!! I've watched sorghum molasses being made at an area mennoite community, which was really cool and I know how it starts off thin when they burn it off. Also, it would have to be thin to use in horse feed or it wouldn't mix well. Thanks so much as you saved me the embarrassment of accusing the seller as misrepresenting the item.

For what it's worth next time around you should be able to find "feed grade" at farm supply stores as well as some hunting supply joints. Just seems like a weird thing to buy off eBay!
