So I have 3 sheets of 4x8 plywood sheets in my garage. Curious what would be a ideal size cab for 4 maybe 5 plants. I will be using a combo of 3 500 watt equivelent cfl and 2 135w led ufos. So what size box and is that enough lights maybe add a few smaller cfls around?

I would get a tent or panda film and pvc pipe you don't really want plywood

Hey rj. I am with the others in just purchasing a tent. I have a tent as well as refurbished a old wood cab that I had laying around.
Building your own is a lot of work. Tents are so inexpensive now.

Either way you go, we are here to help you out anyway way we can.

Peace!

What are the real advantages of a tent vs wood cab? I already have the wood laying around so that wont cost me anything. I have decent carpentry skills and I wasnt planning on breaking it down. I was going to keep a continual rotating crop going. I am just ignorant of tents. Someone school me?.

Well, your tent is already going to come lined with a mylar type reflective material on the inside, it is going to be very modular so you can break it down or build it in less than 10 minutes. It is going to have a waterproof drip liner in the bottom to keep spills from going everywhere. They are durable and will last. My oldest one I have right now is about 5 years old and although I have a large dedicated grow room now, one of my tents is still right next to my grow room in case I need to isolate a problem plant. The money it will cost you to line the inside of your plywood with mylar will pay for a tent or come close to it.

As for the positives of a wooden grow box, you can disguise it to be very stealth. That is the only reason I can think of for building one. Well, I apologize, that and the fact that you can take pride in knowing you built it yourself.

Hey, it is your time and wood. I am not going to say don't do it. I just know from my perspective, after owning several tents as well as building a grow room from ground up, I would invest a few dollars in a tent for my first few grows. You will want to go bigger. I started with a 3x3x7 tent, wound up buying another one, then bought a 5x3x4 then built a 10x12x10 dedicated grow room. I first started out thinking the same thing as you, I would build something small to star with. Looked at the price of mylar and for what mylar would have cost to line the box I was going to build I bought a tent. I still own that tent and use it regularly.

Well for one thing tents have so many openings for venting built into them, as well as already having the reflective material on the inside. With building your own you should either paint, or put some reflective material on the inside. Then there is the extra cost for vents, hinges for the door/s etc. when building your own.

With all that being said, building your own can also have some advantages, such as complete custom sizing.

I am actually going to be building another custom cab myself so that I can put shelving in it and run several sets of of T5 lighting for vegging.

Hope this helps some!

Peace!

I was planning on doing white paint inside and hinges and other hardware wont add much expense. I would can cut vent holes for a inline duct fan. all in all the build would only be an out of pocket cost of 45$ <> Im not saying this will be my permanent set up just something to start with. I have a double car garage that I can see becoming a single car garage in the future.

Go for it!
Yea my double car garage is now a NO car garage. When I built this house I swore that the garage would ONLY be used for cars. Had one of my vehicles in it overnight when I first built it.

Keep us updated!

Peace.
