I like to start seeds in a paper towl just untill they crack and I see the tip of the tap root peeking out then I put it in soil. I do this to make sure the seed is good but do not want to damage the microscopic roots if I let it go too long and it grows into the paper towl
i use the paper towel method and have had literally 100% germ rate so far..the only problem ive had with that method is dropping the seed a few times from the tweezers when going from paper towel to soil but thats just my fault..
Paper towel or straight into the soil - I think it depends on personal preferences. You find a method you like and you stick with it. I've been germinating seeds for over thirty years and I can't say which is best. I've fucked up the paper towel method and I've fucked up the soil method, but most of the time I get it right whatever method I use.
I soak for 24-48 hours until they crack and then plant in pre watered mix. Lightly press the bean down into your medium and lightly cover a little. You can cover with plastic wrap until sprouted if you want. It helps keep moisture, temps and humidity good for germinating. I used to use the paper towel method, but deemed it a hassle after a while. Just me.
I use cotton wool to provide moisture around the seed. Once the white tail appears, I insert seed in pre-watered soil with white tail pointing up(not down).
