iam sure the dutch government changed the laws to stop/ban tourists from going to the coffee shops in amsterdam, it was supposed to be changing in january of this year

Bring lots of money... weed is expensive, so are the whores.

I heard that they still were opened?!?! Could be wrong... Google here I come... As far as the dam best vacation ever with exception of Rome. I seriously spent about 1g in five days sampling everything I could get my hands on... I personally don't know if I'd want to go with a group, get a good friend go smoke up at every shop and WALK WALK WALK I was a waking fool over there... Besides the plus of the marijuana it's one of the prettiest interesting cities I've been too... It has the more canals than Venice... The
Museums are incredible (reichs (sp?) was awesome...) take a tour to the country side while there as well... Now mind you this was about 8 years ago aprox so am not sure how things are their now...

i dont think the weed card thing got voted in. thankfully, but I hear they are pushing to cap the potency of mj. dont worry about that though, go wild. you'll love it.

I was on a train from Rotterdam, headed into Amsterdam the day before Christmas eve. I met up with a couple of German kids on the train, one of whom wore a long jesters cap. The dude's jester's cap was like a magnet for the unsavory elements, who kept approaching him. I slunk back about 15 feet with a scowl on my face to keep people from accosting me. We headed straight to a coffee shop and got too stoned. When the coffee shop closed at 11:00 we realized it was too late to get into a hostel. Downtown right then really didn't feel that safe, and I didn't even feel comfortable pulling out my tourist book to find a place to stay. I heard something that sounded an awful lot like gunshots. One of the German kids, the one with the jester's cap, swore he knew a place to camp. They had a tent. Me and the his friend were skeptical, but we didn't have much choice. We started out walking. We were thirsty and out of water, and there happened to be a dude just hanging out in his doorway. So we approached him and he disappeared inside with the bottle. It was seriously about five or ten minutes before he came back with the bottle. As we walked away, we discussed it and sadly decided we couldn't trust the water and poured it out. The jester cap kid was tired, and kept suggesting that we pitch the tent in really questionable areas, like an area with a few shrubs up against a wall topped with razor wire. The dialog in my mind was...here I am following this joker (literallly)...but he's German, so he should know what he's doing. Finally at about 2 in the morning we arrived at the park. The jester's friend looked at a sign and groaned, "No Camping." We were just too tired and decided to pitch the tent anyways. It was then that they admitted they had just bought the tent and had never set it up before. We struggled and finally got the thing set up. As we settled in we were paranoid both about criminals and the police. We decided someone should stay awake to keep first watch...I took on the duty. You know how it is in a tent...every rustle of leaves outside could be an unseen criminal ready to slash the canvas. Soon they were snoring soundly and I knew it would be useless to pass on the watch duties. I just laid there until the first glimmer of morning light.

I poked my head out of the tent and into a different world. We were in a park in an upscale, peaceful neighborhood. People were walking their dogs. The paranoia of the previous night seemed totally unfounded; I couldn't even smell a criminal. I packed up my sleeping bag and departed. On my way out, I looked back at the "No Camping" sign and saw that it actually read "Camping." But I'd had enough. I made my way back to the train station and headed back to Rotterdam. Actually a rougher city, but I had a hostel and coffee shop that I knew.

Several years later I went back to Amsterdam and had a totally different experience. I stayed in a really clean hostel, had a couple of truffle trips (one amazingly good, one amazingly bad, but both good life learning experiences). And what I remember most, actually the reason I started typing this post, was the huge chess set on the sidewalk with two-foot tall plastic pieces. What was amazing about this city and culture, coming from the USA, is that none of the pieces were missing. Here the USA some dipshit would take a piece home to decorate his dorm room within days.

This was all back in the nineties. I'm not really responding to your post...just babbling. Have a good time!
