Not sure about the slow release bit but i find getting a lightly ferted soil gives you more control over your plants doobie imo

You usually don't use a mix with slow release nute because you can't control it. Does the mix give the npk numbers? I'm sure the nutes are pretty weak so they might be ok. Just make sure your ph is correct and watch your plants and if they looke healthy don't give them any added nutes,except maybe some cal-mag.
