It is a common condition. You will see it in photos here and in books/online. From what I recall it is only a very serious condition when the main stem is weak, hallow and the plant is not growing and shows signs of serious lock-out. I encounter it frequently. I believe it is due to early PH imbalance.
I have noticed that once I get PH stable it stops, but, will start up on the new growth of the green stems and main stem--again--once PH gets out of range. Best guess is P and nutes associated with it. Do you have a photo. Sometime in the next few weeks, I will post a photo of my small plants at harvest. One, a Sugar Mango Ryder, had the main stem with purple/red lines. Effected leave size and yield. However, the buds look good and it is maturing on time.

Someone may come along to correct me. And that is good--if so.

I been running some lowberry's for about a year. Moved them to a closet and bought an led and started struggling because of fresh air but I couldn't figure it out and been through all kinds of symptoms. I was wasting my time with MG nutes and I was also way underpowered on lights. Half of mine are purple stems and buds. Half are green and green. I am soaking some pink salad/pink ogre/ mystery citrus right now.(a secret garden seeds auto mix pack)I will be using real nutes this time. I'm far from an expert but you learn a lot from the problems you encounter. Lots of studying. (I think soil microbes and foliar feeding and water feeding seaweed/kelp are a big advantage that's overlooked)

and I loved the movie LIFE...cantgetright is hilarious

your the first person to get that.....lol ......and i have been reading a lot about foiler feed and the things you mentioned its all overwhelming to me right now ....but i tell you.....you guys and gal here at AFN (myfam)help me put a lot of info into contexts ...i have a slow learning curve when iam passionate about something and for some reason i cantgetrite with out a lil push.....:group:and lowberry ...ok i have to check that out i like to grow stains that the people here grow i figure i cant go wrong if i do that...lol
