Question about tap water..

I use tap water for my plants as it's basically my only option. I've got six plants at about 9 weeks and they take a lot of water. I try to let the water sit 24 hours to get the chlorine out, but how necessary is this? I already have seven gallons of water sitting around, it takes up a lot of space! Wondering if some of you veteran growers have experience with just running water straight from the tap? Did it affect the plant in any way, could you see a difference when allowing the water to sit out? Will the straight tap water kill any micros that I add to it?

You must let tap water sit out at least 24 hours and I also like to run air through it also. The chlorine will kill micro life, that's kinda what its put in the water to do. It is also like poison for your plants. No, it will not necessarily kill them but it will destroy your soil life and is not good for your plants.

Thanks guys, wish I hadn't ran so much plain water through in the past few weeks. Once I get my ph under control I won't need to use as much.. I appreciate the help!

i know what you mean with the gallon jugs all over the place, I went to Walmart and got one of these:

I fill mine up with RO water (though tap is fine depending on what nutes your using, if relying on AN ph perfect nutes must be ro water), than when I'm not feeling lazy and remember I throw the air stone into the bottle and leave over night... The entire adjusting the ph of each gallon of feed is what gets me, it's one of main reasons I'm having a hard time trying to stop using AN nutes..

if $$$ allows it get a to filter (a simple 3 or 4 stage model will suffice) and than the advanced nutrients line ph perfect nutes and you are promised a fool proof grow! Im slowly though trying to convert and get away from advanced nutrients as eyes on fire and evol have Inspiried me by their informative organic adventures....

So my if using tap water it is need to be left out to dechloronate.

Thanks Yoda.. I thought about getting one of those but I've had two back surgeries and don't know about lifting that thing when it's full! I've also got a somewhat stealth grow and that sucker in your link would be hard to hide if necessary! I can't imagine trying to pour out of that into 1 gallon jugs! I go through about 6 gallons every 3 or 4 days so it's a lot of work. I've got 8 jugs now and will start rotating them when I water and feed from now on, thanks again for your input it's much appreciated guys!

And for the record.. after years of oxycontin and pain, I'm a year clean with only the weed to blame :Sharing One:

This is what I use to bubble water and make teas http://www.rei.com/product/618168/reliance-aqua-tainer-7-gal .
I cut about an 8" square in the top (I leave one side partly connected as a hinge).
Fill through the hole, air lines in, just open the spigot to fill whatever you use to feed.

Nice, that's got me wondering where I can put it! That would be easy to bubble as well with a cut out in the top like you suggested.. How do you keep your water from growing funk in there? Do you drain it dry after use? Thanks for the idea :tiphat:

I use cat litter buckets to bubble my water. They hold about 4 gal each. We use big 57 gal barrels in our larger grows. Just wash them out really well every 2 weeks or after you brew tea.

I'm a little late to the party...but, it depends on your tap water as well. Where I'm at, my tap water has been tested to have chlorine content of 4ppm, with tds of ~120ppm. In another location I few cities over where I grow, you can smell the chlorine as soon as you turn on the faucet, a quick test showed tds north of 400...that grow is 100% RO, both are using AN nutrients, with no noticeable difference in the quality or yield between the two.
