have a two-bucket rdwc. today roots from the plant bucket reached the second bucket. how do i keep them from growing into the pump?

do not cut your roots. thats unwanted stress to the plant IMO. just pull them back to their original reservoir. its what i do.. or get a mesh for the return pipe. OR get a wider return pipe. i run a 2.5" return pipe with no blockage. and i have no mesh either. i dont really recommend the mesh.. because if the roots accumilate there, then it can cause blockage.

Thanks for your response. Your original post inspired me to go got the tree seedling pots. My thoughts, and would appreciate your experience, is to plant directly into exactly the same final media in the pots, as was used in the trenches.

I’m thinking of slicing the sides of the pots and holding the bottoms together with tape. Thinking about popping the seeds about 3 weeks prior to anticipated transplant date June 1. Again, size is an issue. The final transplant space is a 20’x36’ hoop house located just shy of 44 lat. The seedlings wii be transplanted into trenches previously prepared with am excavator, 40% compost, 30% coir, 20% vermiculite. Last year used fabric bags, Want to consolidate veg space. Thoughts much appreciated.

7. ROOT PRUNING
Root maintenance will contribute to a healthy root structure.

Root pruning is the process of trimming roots to promote new growth and maintain proper root structure. This technique encourages lateral root growth which will contribute to a healthy root structure. A single root when pruned will split into multiple feeder roots, resulting in increased root surface area.

Only been doing this for 10 years. All your trimming are the runners. They will clog your piping. Don’t care what you do. Also, clean your inline filter!

No, just reach in grab the root mass and cut off the runners. Very easy, does not affect the.
plants. Don’t know how one would do rdwc without root trimming and chiller. As I said, to each their own.
