Hope everyone is well on here...haven't been on here for ages due to studies and a new job but still keeping my tent and plants growing....had a super summer with my veggies!

Anyway more to my point...not a journal but just a quick question ive got for selecting a mother from an array of regular seeds ive purchased...

I managed to get hold of some of the cannarado grape pie crosses on the drop a few months ago and it was silly hard for me in the UK to get hold of but I managed it through a few friends....but anyway I got 3 packs and I believe there is 10-15 seeds of each strain in each pack....they are regs so I need to sort males/females etc and pick a good mother to keep going (if I get a keeper that is)...could anyone chime in on the method ive thought about in my head to sort through them and select a winner please!

I grow in a very limited space, 0.8x0.8m tent so 2.5x2.5ft which is why im asking the questions really! I have bought a separate small tent to keep clones and my mothers when selected as well...

Steps im going to use...

1) Germinate the 10-15 seeds
2) Sow the seeds into 4L pots (I can fit 16 into my 0.8x0.8 space)
3) Grow these for 4/5 weeks but prune to keep small
4) I intend on using these cuttings for clones
5) Root out these clones whilst keeping the original seeded plants in the small pots
6) I assume this will take 1-2 weeks for the cuttings to root so by now I assume the original plants will have shown their sex. At this point separate the males/females.
7) Keep the originals growing very slowly in the mother tent whilst flowering the clones from each theoretical mother.
8) harvest, dry and cure the cloned plants
9) assess which ones were easy to grow, which ones have best structure such node spacing, stretch, bud density....then traits such as flowering time, yield, taste, smell etc would all be considered....
10) donate or sell the other plants/mothers them to someone and continue to keep my mother myself...

Does this sound like the most sensible solution to hunt through the seeds in a small space? I have never don't a hunt like this before and the seeds were pretty pricey so want to get the most out of it and try to find a few winners I want to keep as mothers...

Also I have been told to try to keep the original seeded plants as mothers as they are typically stronger...but is there any difference in using a mother from seeds or from a clone?

you pretty much have it down my freind that the theroy of it anyways only way to do it really putting it into practice will be a bit more challenging you have to think that the clones will get quite big by the time you flower and test the seedlings plus you might want to take two clones if possible to make sure you get one that roots of course this all depends on how many females you get but you have the right idea best of luck genetics sound great id love to see how you get on if you make a thread

ah perfect...there isn't too much about on the internet apart from 'pheno hunt' articles which really are of not much use for a guide or how to etc...more just explaining what people look for when they do the process themselves....after thinking about the theory of doing this its made me appreciate breeding a LOT more than I ever did...you realise how much work actually goes into any good cross/strain....

Yea I will probably top the seedlings a few times and attempt to use these cuttings for clones...I intend on taking at east 4/5 off each plant incase a few don't root etc...then I will probably flower them in a SOG style setup so they will be kept small and even just one cola each....

do you think the clones will get that big if im taking them off the original seeded plants at 3/4 weeks?

the original plants I assume will show sex at 5 maybe 6 weeks (ive never grown a photo out that long without forcing it to flower in 12/12 and they have all been feminised seeds)….so the cuttings will have 2 or so weeks to root and get settled ready to be flowered in my no-till setup as soon as ive culled the males...

I would be very very tempted to keep some males incase I ever wanted to breed but I think its biting off more than I can chew...just seems like it could be a big waste of some good genetics!

I will probably make a thread to document it and it will help me for memory sake etc as well...I got hold of Blueberry Shortcake (Blueberry x Grape Pie), Grape Sundae (Grape Pie x Sundae Driver) and Grape Gelee (Sunset Sherbert x Grape Pie)...ive never smoked any of these so called 'Cali' strains but I assume they must be decent to have gained the reputation they have through jungle boys (albeit their marketing works very well)

yeah takes at least 2 -4 years to create a good stable strain depending on if everything goes your way no fuck ups or unwanted traits that need to be worked out

are you planning on waiting for them to sex themselfs ( not putting them under 12/12) if thats the case then you should be fine say you get a 50% female ratio from 12 seeds you will have 12 clones two off each female plant then some of those can be culled when u need the space if your doing it by taking clones then sexing them under 12/12 like me then space can be a issue im pretty much doing the same as you this year looking for mums to clone

i hope you do make a thread mate can be very helfull if problem arrise people can see what you have done and point you in the right direction also lie you say its nice to be able to loo back on past grows you have some very nice genetics there are they all from cannardo . have you done much research on the crosses so you have a idea what to expect heard good things about sunday driver and the grape pie if i remember il tag you into my grow when i get started should be some cookies n cream crossed from exotic gentics later in the year but first up i have some dosido x purple punch

Yea its mental...made me fully appreciate something a lot take for granted when they just buy a pack of seeds to grow out....made me not as upset to spend over 250 pounds on 3 packs of seeds! shame really as I think a decent breeder would probably love to get hold of these males...if I find the space at home to keep them I might try to if one seems to hold any good traits that ive read about, smelly when the stems are rubbed, dense flower formations etc....would be interesting to germinate a batch of seeds with the mother selected just to see the outcome really!

I thought about the 12/12 from seed but im hoping that by the time ive pruned the original plants, rooted their clones, the original plants shall have shown their sex...if not I will plant the clones up and put them into 12/12 and just cut any males that appear but doesn't help with my special restrictions! unfortunately I live in the UK so not legal but also the guy I live with wont want 3/4 different tents going up around the place unfortunately!

I will make a thread...been slacking on posting on here the past year due to work and finishing uni but I hope to get on here more as everyones been great and it makes me feel as if im giving something back...even if its as you said showing some people how I did it so they can possibly take it and improve on my method...and I bet there will be loads of room for improvement haha...

not done too much research on the crosses...I want to try the blueberry shortcake strain first as I love blueberry crosses...so gonna run them first but I don't know the linage of the blueberry but the grape pie is easy enough to find out...will probably not look too much into what the exact originals are like for aste/smell etc as I want to almost pick something I think is the best but thankfully got a good group of friends around me who can also give their opinion on what they think is the best of the lot....

tag me in your thread as I will be interested to take a look/read through...might help me get a better idea of what im doing! whats the dosido like? they were offering grape pie x dosido crosses but didn't take my fancy unfortunately!
