I want to surround my seedlings with a soil medium, in the container, that is not as "hot" as the surrounding soil.
Light Warrior by Fox Farm is so expensive.

Any other recommendations?

Here's a basic mix I've used as a starting point.

Seed Starter Mix

3.8 cubic ft Peat Bale (expands to 6 cubic ft) 2 cubic ft Oly Mtn Compost
4 cubic ft of perlite
4 c. Oyster Shell Flour or Ag Lime

4c. Gypsum
4 c. Basalt
8 c. Kelp Meal
4 c. org. Alfalfa Meal 4 c. Microbe Catalyst

Makes 12 cubic ft of soil

For me, I keep it simple with just some peat moss, perlite and worm castings for my seedling soil. Dig a hole in middle of pot and shove a solo cup into the hole, with the bottom part of solo cup removed. If I have any myco around, I mix some in too.

They are only gonna be in the seedling soil for 10++ days. So I feel there is no special need to make it too complicated. Just my 2 cents.

I like the solo cup idea. I wonder if I could do it with those biodegradable pots.

Cheap and easy with 100% germ......biobizz light mix in a solo cup. di water. nuff said.

I use one of my soil mixes (BuildASoil and KIS - I use both) and then I cut it with screened peat moss. I use 2 parts screened peat and 1 part soil. Occasionally, I mix 3 parts screened peat and one part soil, IF I know a particular strain is really sensitive. I like screening my peat because I don’t have to worry about large pieces of wood or sticks impeding the sprouting seeds. This is a cheap, easy and effective route if you make your own soil.

You can use just screened peat as well but that’s only good (imo) if you’re starting seeds in a very small container. Since I use solo cups, I want my starting mix to have a little nutrition in it. Hope this helps.
