New Grower Talking Terpenes

Interesting article I came across while doing some strain research. Not auto specific, but great info nonetheless.

Thanks Andy. Over the last year or so, we have started several terpene threads. Most in sections with little activity. I know many are interested including JM etc.

This is a good article.

Maybe we can get some interest here in terpenes and health. Later possibly move the thread to medical once it gets rolling. Will try to contribute.

Thanks, Smithee. I was going to post it in medical or breeding, but figured this article describes things very well in layman's terms so anyone can benefit. Not everyone has the time or desire to dig deep into the science of cannabis, but in my opinion we should all be equipping ourselves with as much knowledge as possible about this plant we care so much about. :Sharing One:

Thats a much easier read than the article I found.LOL!Nice Andy.Reminds me of when I was younger with a fresh grown bag of killer buds.Id open, smell i and say,I could charge 5 bucks a sniff for this stuff.LOL!

I guess my biggest question to start ,to ID the terp. within a specific (Strain X) plant you desire. How would one(as a grower)aquire said terp. ,layden with a specific tested and approved Geno/Pheno Terpene?

Thanks for the article Andy,Awesome!!:pass:

this is the article i ran across a bit ago if ya feel like reading it at all.Hits on a lot of the same angles.

I believe with the new liquid testing method they use they are also able to test for terpenes... It's like you posted over in the breeders section and what I agree with 100% if I could have access of endless testing of samples it would move breeding light years! Imagine being able to test for thc cbd and terps before the plant finishes and through out it life cycle to do your picking and choosing... Excuse the ramble this stuff just excites me the possibilities behind it, I wish I could afford a testing lab... hey maybe we could all chip in site wide... the possibilities just BLOW MY MIND AWAY! I guess though the next best thing to nit having a lab and if your blessed with a good sense of smell (which im not) using terps to help guide you is the like sort of the next best thing with exception to tlc plates which can be done at home... Just not as much and accurate data...
Any how thanks for the great article!

One thought about terpenes.

Wonder if the terpenes--those of interest medically etc. could be added to the cannabis. For instance, adding dry lavender to the oil as it cooks to infuse with linalool. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavender_oil

(This is very interesting excerpt from link:
Lavender oil, which has long been used in the production of perfume, can also be used in aromatherapy. The scent has a calming effect which may aid in relaxation[SUP][2][/SUP] and the reduction of anxiety[SUP][3][/SUP] and stress.[SUP][4][/SUP] Lasea capsules containing lavender oil with a high amount of linalool and linalyl acetate, termed Silexan by the manufacturer, are approved as an anxiolytic in Germany.[SUP][5][/SUP] The approval is based on a finding that the capsules are comparable in effect to low-dose lorazepam.[SUP][6][/SUP]
It may also help to relieve pain from tension headache when breathed in as vapor or diluted and rubbed on the skin. When added to a vaporizer, lavender oil may aid in the treatment of cough and respiratory infection.)

What is interesting is Silexan made from Lavender.

I wonder if anyone has experimented with adding--safe amounts---of certain herbs etc. containing terpines of one sort or another.

Hey ya C. Grow.Hows it goin? Thats exactly what I was thinking.Ive ran across several articles in the past about mixing certain levels(or in general)or say black pepper terpenes,Linalool,as well as other various terpenes (ttogether)to achieve increased healing properties. If anyone knows of any type of source material ar where I might be able to read more about where and how to aquire extracts.Or even more info or various Geno/Phenotypes that have various properties within the terpene family of healing.

When I started growing, I was not a very extreme trimmer. I tended to leave those small leaves on the buds, especially if they were heavily sugar coated. I only grow for myself and to trade with other medical users so it was always a little inside joke that everyone knows my bud by the trim.
I got pretty sick myself for a while and was not very social. During that time, I went through a few personal grows experimenting with trim and cure.
Side by side drying and curing those buds, the buds with those small leaves left wrapping them are noticeably way more fragrant and flavorful than those trimmed close prior to curing.
Once I felt social again, I noticed the people I share with commenting that my buds always have intense smells.
I have some Afghani/AK cross that I tested again with half the buds closely trimmed and manicured prior to dry and cure and the other half trimmed to just the smallest leaves cupping the buds.
Opening jars of either one is very fragrant, but the ones cured with those leaves are way more intense in aroma and flavor. I have not noticed a difference in potency.
However, flavor and aroma are a huge motivator for me in selection.
I think it is the terpenes in those leaves that make the difference.
