watching Real Sports on HBO they had a segment about NFL players and smoking mj. Most players say they smoke it because they feel it is better than taking what the team doctors want to give them, vicodin etc.
Real Sports then went and talked to the leading expert in the world on thc, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the guy who actually discovered thc. Apparently there has been quite a bit of research about thc and the treatment of head trauma and basically while not a miracle cure, it is pretty darn close.
Dr. Raphael Mechoulam showed this mouse that had some head trauma and it couldn't use it's right legs. treated with thc - it regained full use of it's legs.
Of course when they interviewed the guy in charge of the NFL drug policy he would just say mj is illegal. take what the team dr's give you.
Couple of my thoughts - 1st, I was pretty amazed at how well thc worked. I am always dismayed when i think of all of the people that could be helped right now, but the Fed Government makes too much money by keeping it illegal (imo)
which leads me to my 2nd thought - I am of a mind the NFL is going to be the catalyst that brings legal mj to pretty much all 50 states. Way too many players smoke mj and I would be shocked if the player's union doesn't take all tests for mj away when they do their next collective bargaining agreement. When this happens, i think it will be made into a huge deal which will then eventually lead to widespread legalization.
My opinion - right now it is basically the Fed Government that makes the billions in their war on mj. States are now struggling badly with their budgets due to the "great" economy and they are going to be sitting back and watching Colorado raking in the tax money like they are printing money themselves and greedy as politicians are, are going to want in on the action as they are running out of money to steal from us.
Of course you will have those who are raking in the cash from it being illegal fighting (private prisons for example) against it tooth and nail, but as it is now, the bulk of the money from it being illegal goes to the Feds, the states just get the crumbs.
State politicians, always ready to take advantage of a situation that will benefit them, could use the talk that would emanate from the NFL basically legalizing mj to go ahead and make it legal in their state.
It will actually have zero to do with the actual medical benefits but will only be about the money. Soon (few years tho they are thinking about it seriously right now), state politicians are going to be thinking why should they bend over and let the feds keep raking in the cash when they could be having tax dollars pout into their coffers like it is raining cash.
Point of my garbled thoughts - I do believe the NFL is going to end up being the catalyst for making mj legal pretty much country wide. Of course a few states will shy away from it (those that are not broke), but the vast majority of states will be seeing nothing but green when this conversation hits.
Wonder when the next collective bargaining agreement for the nfl is......
