Lighting University study says LED beats HPS hands down.

Good article.

I emailed the student, asking her if she can provide detailed study results and what sort of problems they may have had.

Hoping she can shed some light (no pun intended!) on the dreaded cal/mag def.

not trying to bust your balls , but , where does it say "LED beats HPS hands down" ?

i do not believe you should have titled it as saying that

also from what i gather , they arent finished studying weather or not the "tomatoes" taste better or worse

the only thing they say is the led's reduce electrical consumption/cost by up to 25 % , they also mention how the hps helps lower the cost of heating , not efficiently of course , but they do help lower the cost of heating , so that would chop into the lower cost of electrical consumption when using led's , so if the led's were 25% cheaper to run you would have to figure the heat savings would drop the led's 25% savings down to 15-20% ??? and still left wondering if the quality is any better , the same , or worse

anyway, long story short , its an unfinished study and your title is misleading

peace

p.s. dont get me wrong , im not hating on led's , if i could afford the initial cost id fill my rooms with them

Good points bob. Ye i guess i was a bit sensationalist with the title ;+}

The cost/benefit ratio must be good, though. If you google led pinkhouse there are a lot of people exploring it :

Your right Bob,its basically talking difference in power consumption and actually says there was no difference in quality or yield.

It's been a while, but did you ever hear back about from the student in the study? Also, wanted to mention that if you live in a warm climate, like I do then in the summer time the hps will actually cost you more money to run AC and not heat. When I was running a 1000 watt hps in the middle of the summer, even with an exhaust fan blowing into the attic the whole room that the walk in closet grow room would stay 5-10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. So here where I live you might figure that in the summer time led's might save me 30-35% on electric.

I agree with this as it applies to my current situation. Even with my LED on 12/12 it is pumping some heat out into the house here in the summer. In the winter I heat the home anyways so it will all even out without the high cost of A/C. Even at 9000ft in altitude my house gets hot from the blistering sun in the summer, I'd need A/C to keep it cool. In the winter the pellet stove runs 24 hours a day anyways keeping the house warm which costs much less than it does to run an A/C.

Every situation is different though.... My HPS lights never let me down
