Grow Mediums Using fabric pots in autopot?

I've been thinking about doing something like this too I got the idea from this picture I found on a blog
Grow+Bags+and+Aquavalve.jpg

I know on the autopots site they sell an aquavalve kit called "easy2go," seems like all you need to get is a reservoir. Looks like a really cheap way to get into autopots, I may just try it out. But anyways it seems like it has been done before with good results!

Looks like a cool idea. But I'd be worried about Algea.

This looks to be an easy mod for airpotting your autopots... (i'd probably do more, smaller holes though).

As for the original question... I've used the round 3gal(i think, maybe 2gal.) smartpots in my dual round(the original) autopot for a couple tomato plants outdoors. Perfect fit. They grew insanely big. Main stalks just kept going. Probably at least 12ft. Strung them around inside of greenhouse like creeping vines. I could hardly believe these plants were coming out of these small pots.

neil is a good guy i like his vids some intresting ideas going on in here :pass:

Looks like this post was many years ago, but I just stumbled on it. I want to use fabric smart pots in my autopot system for more air to the plant...but i find smart pots are so "messy". What about drilling holes in the autopot and just dropping a fabric smart pot inside it? hmmmm.....

If you are going to fit anything to your water main, remember to fit an overflow pipe too!!! Float valves fail. :jointman:

Hello all, has anyone used fabric pots in the autopot before and if so, how was it? I'm planning on using some cut-down 8L fabric pots to replace the 15L autopots. I feel the plants are more dense when grown in the smaller autopots and flower quicker, but would be great for the roots to be unrestricted.

Anyone's advice with that would be great

Thanks!
They work fine. My first grow with three autopots netted over 300g dry in spite of my screwups. Anyone interested can take a look at my grow and autopot review in my sig, and shoot me questions if interested.

Re. the flood table design showed in the drawing, I would be a bit careful unless someone actually demonstrates good results. There is a potentially important difference between that setup and any of the normal autopot setups. The issue is that there is a lot of extra standing water that the plants will have to absorb during each flood cycle, and this will lengthen the cycles, potentially to the point that root rot, overwatering and other problems arise. This will especially be the case early in a grow when plants are small and their uptake much less than later, and in soil grows that may not drain as well as coco does.

I am going to do three 10 gallon fabric pots with soil fed by a single autovalve this winter, but the "flood table" will be fitted snugly around the pots, and the spaces between pots filled to avoid the extra water. I will also be putting a ~1" layer of coco/perlite in the bottom of the pots to make sure that the flood zone drains and aerates well during the flood cycle. I don't trust my soil mix to do that, and I know for sure from my grow last winter that the coco mix will.

Happy growing all. :pighug:

I have (4) 2.2 gallon autopots. The 2.2 gallon are the same circumference as the 3.9 gallon and fit perfectly in the bases....they are just shorter. Soooo, I ordered some 2 gallon fabric pots and I think I will do a side by side comparison grow at some point. One 2.2 gallon plastic autopot will stay as normal, and the other one I will drill holes all around and line it with the fabric pot. I will use the same strain, method, feed and lighting on both plants start to finish. The only difference will be their pots. Also, both pots will be filled with coco as I dont like using soil in the autopots~ I just dont get the same results. :smoking:

I use the 3 gallon square fabric pots and they fit perfectly in the trays. I buy them 50 at a time for about $52.
