I recently bought a 400w air cooled hood that came with a HPS bulb and MH bulb. To get to the point the MH bulb was broke but the HPS bulb is ok and works. I have 2 seeds germinating and are about ready so can I put them straight under my hps all the way through? Also should I run my light 24/7 until the seedlings break the surface of the soil?

The HPS will be fine all the way through, your plants will love it. Personally I don't even turn the lights on until they break soil. No point in having lights on if there's no plants to light up.
I leave my lights on 20/4 for the entire cycle.

Just keep that HPS high up when they are newly sprouted so you don't cook em. :peace:

What they said I think it's about 18in off them correct me if I'm wrong ....

I thought I should have the lights on to make the planted seedling want to go towards the light therefore breaking the soil? Or are u suppose to leave them off until the seedling breaks the surface..or is either way fine

Hey bud, the plant wont see light til it comes up from the soil. :bong:
Its dark under that soil, won't see anything:wiz:

Well can I still put them under my light before they break the surface, my tents in my room and I have a AC unit so it stays cold so I thought with the light off temps would be a lil too cold. Does it matter or is leaving the lights off until they surface just the best way to do it? Just want to be safe :wiz:

I leave my lights on before they break the surface just in order to build some heat up

So u leave ur lights on until they break the surface and have no problems?

You're not going to have problems if you turn your light on before they sprout, it's just a waste of power to be lighting up dirt. The plants aren't using any light under the soil or in their seeds, they first have to break through the soil and drop the seed casing before it's much good to them.

What ninja is describing is using his lamp like a seedling heating mat. The heat from the light makes the cups a little warmer to help promote germination. I'm a total penny pincher, I use a low wattage heating mat as apposed to lights for that.

To each their own, neither way is wrong.

Hope that helps clear things up! Good luck on your grow!
