Got a 400 watt Lumatek digital ballast. I think I want to veg with
a metal halide bulb, but there's a bunch of different kinds.

Any opinions on what to get?

I've been using iPower brand bulbs for over 2 years now for all three of my lights. Have had only one bulb fail on me; and that was in part the result of losing power from the power company working on lines outside (it may have been nearing end of life as well, was an original bulb that came with the reflector/ballast.) I'm sure you've seen the prices vary greatly between manufacturer; and I'd definitely wager some are better than others. I've had great success with their product line though (I use their ballasts and cool tubes as well.) However, their bulbs are pretty much the only ones I've used; so keep in mind my bias toward them

Ultimately whatever you choose, be sure that YOU are comfortable with it; do some research and don't get strong armed into a decision.

Have you done any searching in the Lighting section? Flip through a few of the pages and you'll quickly see brand specific questions.

Hope that helps a bit bro!

If you're willing to swap bulbs while growing - might as well go all out. Do you have a budget for the bulb? If not, the answer is a no brainer - Digilux 400W MH bulb. The bulb is MADE for digital ballasts and it has a higher lumen per watt ratio than it's counter parts.

I run only digilux bulbs for my HPS and the difference is like night and day. They also honor their warranty 100%, so let's say on the 11 month of the year your bulb dies.. You e-mail them, explain it, they email you back and authorize the exchange you send them a picture of the smashed bulb you have a new one in two days. I replaced a bulb that looked as if it had lost some of it's power (this is common with HPS) and they allowed me to get a new one free of charge. I couldn't even prove really that it had lost some power, my eyes may have just gotten used to it.. but the new one was much, much brighter!
