Obviously I know they're are going to grow downward, but are they going to grow all the way to the bottom and then reach out or do they grow outwards more at first making their way toward the bottom as they get older? I'm just curious can't find the answer anywhere on google.

They tend to go down and out in all directions although I have seen them grow down and then swirl round the bottom of the pot.
Good luck my friend

my experience says a plant's roots' priority is to grow down first in search of water, followed by potentially intense branching anywhere from 1-6 inches behind the root tip. the way i've seen the roots grow (hydro setup), it seems their first priority is finding water, growing with almost no side branching until they hit the reservoir. once they hit the reservoir, the roots tend to continue to grow rather rapidly in length (i'm saying length is comparable to downward growth since they hit the bottom of my res pretty quickly), with more and more branching as you get closer to where the roots meet the plant, however right at the base of the plant, the roots tend to get THICK with less branching. the "downward" growth slows after a time, and more delicate side roots continue to grow as the plant enters flowering as the side branches (of the roots, not the above ground plant) develop their own side branches. before and during the few weeks as the plant enters flowering, the addition of mychorrizal fungi causes EXPLOSIVE root growth in the form of extensive side branching.

this is all from personal observations of the strain MI5 in a hydro setup, so it's possible other mj strains have different root growth "priorities" but i'd be willing to bet this sort of growth is seen across the species.

one other thing to consider is root trimming. roots will terminate themselves if they end up drying out. the tip (where all new length comes from) will shrivel up and essentially kill itself so other roots can use the plant's energy to search out more nutrition. in my hydro setup, similarly to a plastic pot, roots almost never get the chance to self prune because they aren't exposed to the air long enough. think of it like this - you've lifted up a pot and found roots growing out the bottom, coiled around in that dark, humid area. however, if you lifted that pot off the ground and allowed good airflow to the drainage holes, roots might start to poke out, but they'd quickly stop growing and self prune. this is MUCH more likely to happen in an airpot, and a good thing. those coiled roots at the bottom of your pot aren't absorbing nutrients as efficiently as roots buried in media, since they're competing against each other to absorb nutes. anyway, now i'm rambling and lost my focus on what i was trying to say, so i'm going

Cool I was wondering because I have 7 gallon pots and I was going to mix 12 cups worm castings with 15.5 cups light warrior and 8 cups perlite for top soil then 51.5 cups SS and 17 cups perlite for bottom. (Makes precisely 6.5 gallons) and then put a layer of pebbles on the top to keep the dirt from shifting around and maybe contain a little moisture idk how will that will work with smart pots though

Edit: I'll be growing outdoors btw

first off, 7 gallon pots are HUUUUGE for autoflowers, but it shouldn't hurt if you have enough media to fill your pots. what strains are you growing out of curiosity? also, what is SS?

Hahaha yea I know but they say 2 gallons for every foot so.. But Monday I'm starting 2 diesel auto 2 black cream and 2 red poison :smoke: SS = super soil I'm trying to do true living organics and get some smooth fine tasting bud

nice selection there! those are all strains i've considered growing, but never got around to it. and yeah, organics are the way to go. i don't have the means to really do that, otherwise i'd probably stop doing hydro in favor of a true organic soil setup. good luck with your grow, and you should definitely consider keeping a grow journal on here!

Thanks man i'm just worried bout this weather if it's not a thunderstorm then it's mostly cloudy all day which is what I really hate about it here but yea i'm definitely going to keep a journal let them germinate since last night then going to fill my pots up after I smoke:smoke:

Edit: sorry that's kinda crammed i'm in a hurry to git r done

THIS STATEMENT ISN'T TRUE:

i wouldn't worry much about the weather, even on a cloudy day, there are more lumens/square foot than most of us can provide indoors, and a little intense weather should make for stronger stems, assuming they don't get badly damaged. are you starting your seeds indoors, or outdoors the whole time?

This is not true. Not even close. On a sunny day you're looking at around 10,000 lumens a sq foot, give or take a few thousand. On a cloudy day you're looking at more along the lines of 2000.

Basically, sunny day is a 1000w hps and cloudy day is a 23w cfl.
