Did you have a stuck seed hull? How'd you squish her? :smokebuds:

Yep. Put my thumb nail through the centre eeeeeek. You know - it's always best to just leave. If it's going to sprog its going to sprog. Why get stressed? I knew this when I was messing with it.

It's all good, learning experience! Do you have any idea how deep you planted them in the soil when you put them in? I was doing a little reading on seed husks last night for a different thread; I found a few different sites that mentioned part of the problem with husks not removing themselves is caused by seeds being planted too shallow. From what the articles stated, it's that first initial push up through the substrate that really loosens up and removes the seed hull. Makes sense when you think about the husk pushing against soil and whatever substrate you're using and the abrasion causing it to loosen. Whether that's the case or not, I've had seed hulls stick on my girls several times.

As long as the initial round leaves (the cotyledons) are able to spread out, you should be alright. If you have a husk that's stuck on one of the leaves and it's not apparently hindering the leaf growth; let the leaf grow out a bit and then pick it off, or let it fall off naturally. If the hull is preventing the leaves from opening at all, then definitely take steps to remove it.

I've read of people taking eye droppers and blotting the husk several times during the day to help soften it up, then removing it with a tweezers (that's what I use, I have butter fingers.) You could try a humidity dome for a bit to raise the humidity level for the plant for a bit which in turn would soften the hull.

Maybe some of these tips will help you out in the future :wiz:

Regardless, I'm sorry for your loss. I know it's frustrating to watch those several days go down the toilet. But, keep your head up, keep your spirits up, and bounce back stronger! :smokebuds: :karma Cloud:

I soak in water first - then in paper towel in airing cupboard - I put in soil as soon as I can see a reasonable start about 1.5 cm under. She was not cracking at all. What I should have done is stick her under the soil regardless of sprouting a root. Would have been better than squishing her ! The rest sprouted - some have bigger taps than others and I will have to watch out for those - so those tips will help :smokebuds:

3 x Bubble and 1 White Widow (really long tap root) in Biobizz Light - 5 / 7 litre pots. Waiting on others to sprog a little more root. Under polythene 29C. To get an outside temp when polythene removed will require dropping light to 14" above seedlings. Could this burn the leaves? Should I get temp up with a heater ? :coffee break:

29c is getting a little on the high end of the temps we want alot of people have it around 25c and im not a HPS user so not sure on the light height but i do think 14" for veg is too close someone else will chime is soon :peace:

dont sweat it about it being around 29 ive had spells of 35c and still got good yeilds lool but 25/27c better :D:

if you get a husk stuck on the sprout a good thing to do is spit on it, or rather spit on your finger and deposit it on the husk.
saliva is thicker than water and will cling to the husk, where water will just bead off. this will soften it which will aid the plant in shedding the husk by itself or if you are impatient after about 12 hours you should be able to just touch it and it will fall off.

just my :2cents:
