Have been looking into making honey oil, and would like some advice from the experts.

First question, is alcohol better or worse than gases for making honey oil?

Second question is isopropyl VS ethanol and butane VS hexane.

Thanks!!!

Its all a matter of personal preference bro. I have made some real good honey with ISO and I think it's a good starting point for someone who's making it for the first time. I think butane makes a better stronger concentrate but it takes a lot of time and $ and practice to get it right. Not to mention the dangers of butane extractions.... I have no experience with ethanol or hexane.
Have you ever thought of making bubble hash??? Lots of good info out there and it's way safer. I've been leaning on the bubble over chemical extractions. :smokebuds:

I have never made any extracts so I won't comment on that in particular. I will say though, I used to work in a soybean refinery and we used hexane to extract oil from the soy beans. If you are considering using hexane, please be sure you understand what you are dealing with. 1) It is highly volatile, any small spark at all will cause combustion. We used to work with beryllium tools and could not wear anything metal, including belt buckles, steel toed shoes, anything that had the possibility to create a spark or cause static electricity. It is seriously dangerous. 2) It has a high probability of causing stupor if you are near the vapors. I was carried out on a stretcher one day working around the stuff. It overcomes you quick and you will be stoned out of your gourd in minutes, pass out and never know what hit you. I am not saying to use it or not but I am saying be damn sure you understand what you are using before you choose a product. It has excellent extraction rates and that is why it is used commercially in food grade factories but it is highly dangerous stuff bro! I cannot overstate that last fact. Highly dangerous.

I would tend to be like robwars and would try to persuade you into bubble hash.

I have a set of bubble hash bags I have never used. Seems like a lot of work and a lot of ice.

Really do not want to use gases. The danger, environmental damage, is smoking it bad, the cost.

Just wondered if gas somehow extracted better. If so, would do an alcohol extraction afterwards.

Thanks!!!!

Really hoping to hear that ethanol does a great job.

Plan is to use a still. First try will run everclear through it to get last 5% of water out, freeze ethanol and product, do quick rinse, run through still again, which will output alcohol, and oil will be in still. Need to find bowl to put in still to contain oil.

Really did want to use gases. My knowledge is from 1970's, and Ethanol was considered the best solvent, except for ether, which is controlled substance.

Thanks to all!!!!

After a quick run for honey oil, can it be rinsed with water to get out chlorophyl, before a long soak and final extraction?

Thanks!!

I thought gases were dangerous, and bad for environment. Could not understand why they would be used.

That's an awful lot of work compared to just a QWISO or BHO run. Kitchen chemistry has come a long way since the seventies. Your enthusiasm is great and I always enjoy hearing about old school methods, but there are way easier ways to do what you're looking to do. A QWISO run is about as safe as it gets, and if done in quick bursts (15-20 second soaks) and processed properly you can get potent, high quality material easily. You might want to check these links out for more info on QWISO and QWET. Easy, safe, quick, and potent.

As an aside, I have a friend who saves the herb he makes tinctures with (he makes a lot of tinctures) and uses a still to reclaim any residual alcohol. He calls the reclaimed alcohol 'Blue Lightning', after it's beautiful color. If it's drunk, the effects are more than just alcohol but don't seem weed infused. Turns out all the azulenes present in the alcohol make a great antihistamine for all sorts of allergies and a great eczema treatment. Experimentation is awesome.

Water, no. But hexane, absolutely. There's a process at the tail end of making BHO called winterization or polishing, and it uses a good, easy to purge solvent like hexane or drinking alcohol to get rid of all the undesirable flow-through. You can find a detailed write-up on the process using alcohol here. Here is more info on using alcohol and hexane. This is a necessary step when making BHO to make sure it's as safe and pure as possible. It's less necessary with QWISO, but it's never a bad idea.

I see some great posts here:thumbs:
I vote for quiso, gonna do it myself with leftovers.

A noobish question; can I use buds with some mold for quiso?

Looked into it, and making vodka from scratch is a bitch, so will just use everclear, and remove last 5%.
