Well just got seeds!!!! going to try the nirvana northern lights. Some questions
first has anyone ever tried to grow in open space? Not in a grow box or tent my buddy has an enclosed storage space under his stairs in basement. I stopped by a hydro store to look into soil and the guy said it would be a waste of time.

If so how about a 3 by 3 by 4 1/2 box do with 3 cfl on top and two cfl on sides. will that be sufficient? The box will have two small intake fans and one small exhaust.

Will grow in soil in 3 gal. pot.

Guy at hydro store says he can set me up w watering and nute schedule, but id rather get advice from people who grow what i intend to????? Guy at shop says he doesn't grow marij.
He also says not to worry about flushing????

This is first time growing soil choice thinking of fox farms or happy frog mixed with perilite.

Any suggestions is much appreciated !!!!!!!!!!

Thank You Great site!!

he dont grow herbs at all and saying soil is a waste of time.I LOOOVE guys like that,Idda made him quit on the spot come at me like that..what a moron!!good call in asking herb growers.and flushing and using chems, man this guys a champ LMFAO!! yes flush and FF is good but be very leary of their PH issues and tesat your bag prior to purchase or go with a more stable brand imo.or ammend with Lime n so on to try n buffer n thin it out some, but you'll be ok.in an open space with litte reflecting surface it'll lack in flwer and proper veg structure imo.so atleast try and hand some mylar around the plant on flat sheets, door skin something as a flat surface.diamond surface mylar is best cuz it eleminates Hot spots for temps and grohot spots that a plant wil gravitate towards.without that reflaction it'll tend to get lanky'ish and grow very un unifirm towards the light.does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense the hydro guy didn't say that soil was a waste of time he said that growing in an open space was a waste of time. I figured I would see if a grow box was necessary . He say the environment is the most crucial thing and that soil and nutes are easy

soil n nutes are very easy, but you'll want either a higher powered light to give the proper pread in that open space but with smaller less powered lights imo your gonna want some reflection to maximize your plats growth or they'll lack.thats all.ya I mustve missread that I suppose, but ive run across dudes thinking I know nothing when I ask n they always try to lean a certain way. but yeah soil n nutes are uber simple and you'll want that reflective surface n some manner.door skin cut to size and mylar sheeting tack on flat.very cheap and highly effective.good luck bro.:Sharing One:

Thanks!!! And Help

Hey all. I posted a thread in the new growers forum but haven't got answer. This me and my bros. firs shot at this and want to do it right. Just got seeds nirvana northern lights we got this strain because we've read it newbie friendly. My bro has an enclosed space under basement stairs. about 5 x 5 has anyone ever grown in open spaces? I mean with out a grow box or tent?

We will grow in soil ,I stopped by a hydro store and the guy says that growing in open spaces is a waste of time. If this is true there is a guy who makes grow boxes and was wondering if a 3 x 3 x 4 1/2 box with 3 cfls on top and 1 cfl on each side total 5 cfls is sufficient . the box will have 2 intake fans (small) and one out take fan as well. with mylar lining

The guy at hydro shop says that the soil and nutes are easy but he does not grow what i intend to grow!! he says he can set me up on a watering and nute schedule. He also says flushing is not necessary. The soil wuold fox farms or happy frog with perilite.

Open space ??? or get the box???? lights sufficient???

Thanks to any replies Im glad there is a sight like this!!!

Have a happy holiday.

" I USED TO BUY IT BUT NOW ILL GROW IT I ALWAYS KNEW WHAT IT WAS FOR"!!!!!!!

Well I woukd figure growing in open space would dissipate your light and be much harder to control environmentals. Why not just cover the space your in with panda poky or mylar. I prefer panda poly. White on one side black on the other. Get the good stuff an do the floor too. I am no worm so I don't know about soil. Hydro....I like my flood tables and coco. You could go with air pots and coco it can be fed like hydro. Hope this helps.

Welcome aboard too, by the way.

Rover, I don't understand.

Your post was replied to by Eyes On Fire within 9 minutes ! You then chatted with EOF.

So why say no one replied ?

cheers, eP.

Welcome to AFN, this is by far the best place on the net for info on autoflowering cannabis plants. I am kind of confused when you are saying an "open space" if it is under a staircase I don't know why that would be considered open, but maybe I am confused. Also to answer your 2nd question, No I do not think 5 CFLS would be sufficent. Is there a reason why you want to use CFL's for lighting? While you CAN grow decent cannabis with CFLS I do not reccomend it. If you want to do things right as you say then I would go with some LED or HID lighting. There is a reason why almost no one uses CFL's, becasue they simply do not produce enough lumens to support photosynthisis in the flowering stage. They do ok while the plants are vegging but once they start to flower it just isn't enough "juice" to produce dense nuggets. The reason most people chose to use CFL lighting is because they believe that it is a cheaper way to grow, however almost everyone I have ever seen that start with CFL's end up upgrading to LED or HID mid way through the grow because they are not seeing the growth like a lot of the other grow journals here. Now with all that said if you are insitant on using CFL's I would check out a few grow logs of folks who have used them with succsess and see what their yields were. Temper your expectations when using CFLs. The most logical step is most likely going with LED's, I would say probably 80% or more of the folks here use LED's. I personally use HID lighting because it has the highest lumen output of the 3 main lighting sources. The downside to HID's is the heat and you have to have a pretty serious exhaust system to make sure your temps are in check. I hope this helps and if you have any more question feel free to ask away
