Hey Jamez that 4 inch is definitely going to be too small.. however coming into the colder weather now you might (maybe possibly might) get away with it until next spring / summer. One of the most difficult things to get right when starting off is ventilation / air flow. Once you nail that, then success is mainly coming down to what's happening in the pot itself. i.e. what size the pot is, what medium you are using (ph levels of it starting off, what levels of nutrients are in it, how aerated it is.)
If you haven't started growing yet I would highly suggest getting 9 x 11 litre pots. Getting Plagron LightMix and Advanced Nutrients Sensi A&B and Big Bud and following this grow schedule exactly.

That schedule was made by one of the top dogs on here named TaNg. There's probably half a dozen guys on here that kill it every single time, growing massive buds and primo healthy looking plants, like no one else. He's one of them and that's exactly the schedule he follows. He uses Plagron Lightmix. Check out his post on the site somewhere "tangs grow schedule 2"
If you're growing from seed and just starting off I would say Sea of Green would be a good way to start growing. More plants = more chance you'll get some decent bud, if a few of them crap out on you. Plus it's slightly quicker turn around time as you don't need to vegetate them for as long (assuming you're growing photos) if you're growing autos, you're looking at about 70-80 days from seed to harvest. Photos you're looking at roughly the same. Photos require less light, autos require more.
