Anyone use a tower fan like this? Im thinking of getting one to put in my tent but im not sure how much it would cool things down though compared to if i just got more clip on fans, its $70 so before i buy i was wondering if anyone here uses one and how well it cools things down. thanks guys :Sharing One:

Are you buying the fan to provide air flow for inside the tent for the plants? Or are you buying the fan hoping it's going to cool down your space?

If there is nowhere for the hot air to go in your space it won't help with temps I wouldn't think. But I was actually considering getting one of these because it's nice and slender, can be stuck in a corner, and will still get air to all the girls to help with transpiration, and root/stalk strength.

I use tower fans in my tents without any problems. I have a photo of one with my plants in all my grow logs. They work well, when my plants grow taller than my fans. I place them on a milk crate so they blow across the tops of the plant still. And thats how im running a tower fan in my current photo plants run. Best of luck to you. Mines works very well at moving my plants around but than again my extraction fan is strong it keeps the girls dancing by itself.

You're correct medi; without proper exhaust an electric fan would actually raise the temperature in the grow space because the electric motor produces heat (and fans do not cool air, fans move air.)

I have a Lasko tower fan (not this model) that I used for awhile until the oscillation broke; for air movement in the tent they are pretty slick, especially as the plants grow taller and as stated, they take up very little space on the grow room floor (always a bonus!)

I use a smaller one and it is great for keeping the air around the plants circulating & it fits in a small space. You can see it on the right in this photo:

As for cooling, I don't think it makes a major difference. A circular fan will definitely move more air around & probably cool better if pointed up at the light. But the tower fans can't be beat for getting a nice flow of air around the plants without blasting them with gale force winds.

I had the same idea. But, the problem you'll have with those tower fans is that the on/off/speed and oscillator control are electronic switches connected to a little computer. If you have an interruption of power the fan will not resume operation until you press those on/off and oscillator switches again.

I took a couple fans apart and it is possible to cut some wires and attach them to ordinary toggle switches. I don't think it's worth the effort. I ended up putting a large'ish circular fan at the top of the tent blowing down and sweeping side to side.

If you really want to make a tower fan work so that it stays on even after a power interruption, you also have to be concerned with how the fan's motor speed is controlled. Some fans use "dimmer" like electronics internally to control the speed. That's nearly impossible to bypass to an ordinary toggle switch and also have speed control. If you're lucky, the fan will use a motor with different windings for each speed. Each speed has a dedicated wire. In that case, each wire can be cut and attached to a toggle or rotary switch.

I did this to a couple small Lasko 4000 "air stick" desktop tower fans. I considered doing it to full-size Holmes HT-38R (which I confirmed uses motor windings). But, mounting a full-size Lasko 3012 rotary fan up high seemed easier -- and saved floor space. I used a couple U bolts through a piece of 1x4 wood, about 10" long. The U bolts grip the tent leg, clamping the wood onto the tent leg. The 1x4 is then a flat surface to mount the fan.

Note: If you take the time to oil even the cheapest fan, it will last forever. Cheap fans are usually not oiled when assembled by the factory. They wear out quick. A couple drops of oil on the bushing makes a huge difference. Zoom Spout oil (google for it) has a long retractable applicator which makes it easy to apply oil without disassembling ordinary rotary fans. Apply every 4-6 months if using a fan 24x7. If you can get better access to the bearing surfaces, heavier grease (wheel bearing grease at the auto store) lasts longer. I did that with the Lasko "air stick" fans when I had them apart.

I live in a hot climate and use fans a lot. That's why I make a bigger thing out of lubrication.

Very good point, az. No putting the tower fans on a timer due to the electronic switch. For this reason I would not consider using one for anything critical like ventilation, just for moving air around the plants.

THAT'S where I remember seeing one....AB Fills the Tent :)

Thanks for all the replys guys i have an exhaust fan pulling hot air from my hood and tent and i use multiple clip on fans the reason behind the tower fan is because my tent gets so full i have to open the doors and actually have the fans on the outside blowing in and since my tent is in my bedroom i have to sleep with light beaming in my face lol i thought if i could squeeze it in the corner of the tent i will be able to close part of the tent up but still have nice airflow across the canopy :Sharing One:
