I should mention that fox farms contracts out to producers in different regions. Whoever is making it for the PNW really dropped the ball. I've heard of much better results from different regions. YMMV.

I had been using pro-mix HP as a base for organic soil, but there was a big sale on happy frog at my local grow store so i'm doing a run with happy frog now and I'm not very happy with it. I plan on chucking this soil on the compost bin after this run and making a new supersoil with pro-mix HP or Sunshine mix 4 and worm castings. Personally I had better results with pro-mix, worm castings and organic dry amendments. But as others have said YMMV

You can add some build a flower by build a soil to happyfrog
and maybe a little extra aeration and a couple other amendments and have a pretty easy water only grow with a couple well timed top dressings..

I have had massive issues with the past five or so bags I bought of happy frog, bad enough to contact the company about it. After interacting with them I refuse to buy fox farms products anymore.

The bags were about 5-10% thumbnail sized river rocks and they all PHed around 4.3, just killed my plants outright after transplant.

Fox Farm's reaction: Couldn't be our soil, you're mistaken.

I've since switched to a couple of other brands I've had a lot of luck with. Recipe 420 is a great and affordable option on the west coast, but be sure to let it sit and decompose for a few months before using it. When I can find it my new favorite is Roots Lush mix. Lush is a super high quality mix that really doesn't need any extra additives for autos. It's so rich I would not recommend starting autos in it, but it's great for finishing them. I grew some outdoor photos in Lush last year that absolutely exploded with healthy growth. I drive 150 miles to get lush, and it's absolutely worth every penny and drop of gas.

I need to update this, the last eight bags of Recipe 420 that I bought have been absolute garbage. Completely uncomposted beauty bark with a smattering of pumice. It's literally 1/4 woodchips. Not bark, woodchips. This will be my last year using Recipe 420. From now on out it's only roots lush mix.

I'm with you on this, I had much better results when I was starting from scratch with pro-mix or sunshine mix. The good news is the happy frog I tossed in the garden soil helped break up the clay loam, so I hope it breaks down well in your compost.

Did you check the PH of the Happy frog before you added amendments? I'm really curious what it's coming out as for other people.

I use to use HF but the place I bought it from never has it anymore. For growing outdoors I made my own soil with hundreds of pounds of worm dirt I would get from a local commercial night crawler company that sadly closed down permanently during the scamdemic.

Fox Farms Ocean Forest the last time I used it for an indoor grow when I couldn't get Happy Frog turned out to be a big mistake. My grow tent is infested with little black gnats. Hundreds of them. I have spent every day for over a month killing them when I open the tent.

I've been using HF, with no issues. You will have to adds nutes after a couple weeks.

I am going to try Indicanja Purple Cow for the next grow.
