Are plant stems supposed to be solid or hollow?

Hello. I have/had a Durban Poison auto plant that I lost today. She was 2.5 feet tall at only 28 days. Long spaces between her nodes despite being 9-12" from the light from birth. I decided today to try and lean her over a little, if she would. She wouldn't. I hadn't leaned her over 1 inch before I felt the stem collapse. Damn! I thought, no problem, not ideal for an auto, but super cropped plants survive all the time. Ill just prop her up. I gripped the stem to pull her a bit more upright to tie her in that position and the stem simply collapsed between my fingers where I was holding her. At that point I decided she wasn't worth saving and so I cut the stem from the break. Ill make milk out of her.

What shocked me was that her stem is completely hollow inside, like a straw all the way from the base of the plant to the top of it. If youve ever picked a dandelion and looked at the hollow stem, thats what she looked like, only bigger. Is this normal? And if not, what caused it? I do have a fan in the tent, above the plants but below the light so we had air movement.

Here is what she looked like yesterday:

Here is what she looked like after all the drama:

Thank you for any insights. I only ordered 3 of these seeds. The first one failed to germinate and the second is the one you see, so I only have 1 left. I have to get it right next time, since this is the strain Ive most wanted to try for a long while.

I've had some be hollow up higher on the stem. I am no expert in that field.

Thats normal. Most stems are hollow inside. Plant specific, meaning some will have them hollow all the way to the top, some will not. On your next harvest, save the stems and drop them in a crockpot on low for 6 hours. Split them if you want and get a good look inside. Makes a great oil, high in cbd, but tastes awful! Gel cap em! Good meds!

Ind stems also have a greater cavity inside than when grown outdoors for what thats worth

I just recently hacked my girls and found something interesting, yes most of the branches are hollow like bamboo even the main stalk goes hollow half way up! I flushed my girls the night before and after I harvested I left the main stalk with branches still attached in my smart pots and when I woke up to clean up they were still up taking water from the flush so much that it was dripping out of the hallow branches and stalk down to the soil. There is a pic in my journal it was pretty neat.

I've had that happen to me, with a fast autoflower plant. As soon as it started flowering, I tried to bend it a little and it just snapped in my hand. I wanted to die! Good news, though, the lower part of the plant survived and is doing well. It happened about 2 weeks ago and I'm adding here a picture of the plant. The part that snapped also collapsed when I tried to place it back, so I placed it in my Aerogarden. The main flower on top is getting the white hairs, so I'll keep it there to see what happens, but I'm not expecting much from that.

Just don't give up on the remaining plant, it's still probably going to recover.

Hope this helps! :)

And today I found out that the part that broke off is actually getting some root! [emoji12]

I may still get a bud from it.

Thank you all so much for your replies. Please pardon my lack of response, as Ive not been feeling well the last several days. Ive decided to keep her. She still has 8 tops and I can see she is busy working on some new ones at almost every node.

@witchyhour- Im not happy the same thing happened to you but I am glad to know that Im not the only one. haha So cool that it is growing a root. I have my fingers crossed for a bud after all. :)

The rest of her is pretty skinny, but there are buds all over her! :)

I'm getting a new pair of lights recommended here on the forum, and I'm hoping it will plump the buds.
