In having less than stellar germ rates these days, than it dawned on me maybe I'm suffocating the seeds?!?! I put them in moist not wet paper towel than where I think I may be messing up is I than put in Tupperware container and close the lid, maybe opening only once a day to check... Could there not be enough air?i also put on seedling mat. Should I leave the lids cracked opened a bit?

i swear by my little propagator,i love it,keeps me from messing with them, and its cheap as chips

i think the bacto and the self restraint are the real winners though,i have had 100% on all viable looking seeds i have tried.
only fails were seeds cracked in the post and a dickhead local "seedbanks" non germing seeds

I don't think it's the tupperware. You mentioned a heating mat so you have it warm, What kinda of water, Tap, tap rested. tap bubble rested. Distilled. spring, rain, is it ph checked? I use bubbled tap to feed my plants but only fresh distilled to germ.

I have had good success, not saying it's right or wrong but it is simple and has worked. Distilled water in a shot glass room temp. Put seed in shot glass. Cover shot glass with a light proof cup and keep in a warm place. Check in 12 then 24 hours if seed has not sunk tap it and it should. In 24 to 48 hours you should see the tap root. Mean while final pot was prepared and watered several times. Plant germed seed root down in about 4-5mm of your moist soil. cover with that cup you used over the shot glass and then it's in the grow tent. Spritz it with distilled water in 24h but I usually see them in 24 -48.Remove the cover when you see green poking up.

Some reasoning, since soaking I havent had any come up with stuck shells. And no micro root damage from Paper towel. I also use the tiered cup system for a few reasons. Can use starter soil in cup and let roots get a start befor they hit the good shit. Easier to keep wet when young just the cup not the whole pot. It gives the taproot a couple more inches and keeps the leaves off the soil.

I think we all adapt what we can learn to work for us, If you get one little tip all this typing was worth it. May your Germ luck improve and healthy seedlings enrich your life.

aside other factors have you continued to use the same type of paper towels the whole time
people tend to assume that they are all the asme which is not the case really
some hold more oxygen/water in their fibers depending on the way they were manufactured and others can still have a high ratio of chemical residue used to "bleach" pulp white in the manufacturing process
fresh seeds should always be put in the freezer overnight to help "crack the permiable layer of protective shell that hasn't dried enough to ensure a brittle outerlayer
some even scuff thicker seeds w/ some sand paper alittle when fresh to help avoid this
the issue is once the seeds is soaked enough to activate the cycle of life it starts to grow and expand but the outside has been moistened as well and gives the shell a more elastic shell entrapping the emerging baby and holding in moisture then cutting off oxygen and the wetter the medium used the more the shell will wick from the papertowel but the fresh seed doesn't have a drier weak point in the shell yet because it is so fresh the seed hasn't had to rely on eating the stored starch energy which basically breaks down the wall
once seeds are on container on wet towel the container should be tilted side ways and allowed to dripp off any pooled moisture
a couple drops h202 on the towel daily will help sterilize possible towel contaminates and ward off damp fungus and add saturation of essential oxygen /hydrogen to permiate shell till tails sprout
could be some water issues as well but that would be alittle rarer overall but still a possibility sometimes overlooked

the seed mat is good does it create alot of condensation on lid of tupperware container?

while it is a good rule of thumb to soak seeds if they are aged and properly brittle from drying, if they are super fresh you can easily dround them because they have the moisture already needed in the shell and the extra moisture will disipate the air needed

i would say it is crucial to point out the reason the seed sinks is the moisture has saturated the protective layer throughly enough to disipate the oxygen that used to make it float:)
