If most autos finish around 80-90 days what is the advantage to growing them? Cant many photo strains be done just as fast?

My reasons for growing auto's

1) Small stature, easy to contain, don't have to be a certain size, and they grow more evenly (imo), so lighting is easier to manage.
2) Lighting doesn't have to be a lot ( I am using a 150 hps), or adjusted. can just run on 12/12, 24/0 or I like 19/5 for my kids.
3) my auto's will mature in 60-70 days (but I will let them go a few more than that). Commercially, which I don't condone, you could harvest four crops a year easlily, maybe five, lol, theoretically. Outdoors, 2 to 3 harvests per season.
4) They consume less of everything, except oxygen.

Auto's are not for everyone, but they are greater it seems for med patients. And for some particular reason people just like them. There will always be an argument between Af'ers and Photo'ers as far as yield, and potency etc. But the strains are gettting bigger and better all the time. And hey, auto strains may be the wave of the future, and why not be on board? It is a good hobby anyways, but to each his own.

Not here to convince you, maybe just to give you the point of view I have is all.

Great thread, should get some good replies,

Most photos will take longer than 90 days.If you veg for 6 or 7 weeks most photos still need another 8 or more weeks to fully mature. Some auto strains can finish in 65 to seventy days thus you are able to harvest earlier and get another grow started. Some of the autos are producing yields just as good as some photos and the autos usually take up less space than a huge photo.

Since the light cycle doesn't change autos are good for perpetual grows. No need to maintain a separate veg area. They are also good for small spaces. We've got people here growing them successfully in PC cases and Rubbermaid totes. I can grow 4 at a time in a 2' x 2 1/2' space and usually get 8 oz. plus off of them. Plus autos are great if you like variety. I can grow 4 different strains at once if I want, compared to two photos strains in that same space. Photos are still the way to go if you've got the room, but for small, stealth home grows, it's hard to beat autos.

Thanx all for your responses. I am going to give autos a serious go. I really like the idea of one grow room, its easier to manage and more efficient as far as elelctricity IMO.

i do both

Auto's are great for a single grow room if you have more than one grow room then you can do regular strains and have a mother/veg/clone room as well as a flower room.

If you have two spaces then fill in the gaps in the veg room with auto's

I have blackskull five-0 regulars running on a perpetual grow. 14 weeks from taking a cutting to finish flowering. 2 weeks to root, 4 weeks veg, 8 weeks flower with a couple of auto ak47's filling in gaps in 1.4 litre pots going between veg and mother tents. I am now on a 4 week turnaround between harvests with 4 tents on the go. The wife is still doing her best to smoke me out of everything before the next lot is ready though!

Autos teach you to read your plants better...you can screw around and abuse a photo to no end, just flush and keep vegging and you're fine. You don't get a reset button with autos, you have to learn how to properly care for a house plant from day 1. They make you plan out your grow in more detail because you have to account for all phases of life appropriately, no room for error.

All that being said, most auto strains I've smoked taste a tad bit more like fresh grass than the photos I've smoked. I don't mind it, but it's a noticeable characteristic of Ruderalis. As far as the effect, it's comparable, and I'd say Aunty Mossy's Purple AK-47 can hang with the most primo OG strains out there, imo. You can run a full grow of autos in the same time it takes to properly veg 1 large photo, meaning you can do both simultaneously. When it's time for the autos to come down, you flip to 12/12 to flower your big, fully vegged photo, then drop another 4 or 5 small autos around the sides. You can keep a perpetual grow going with autos while you veg/flower your main photo, always having a huge diversity of head stash on hand AND having enough to give pre-rolls out to all your friends/patients

i've grown both and love both for different reasons...

photo's as mentioned are forgiving...if you mess up you just let them vegg longer. once you get the hang of them tho it easy. i would only vegg mine for 3 weeks and straight into 12/12 they would go:smokeit:in 10-11 weeks from clone i would be harvesting. also when i buy photo seed i look for 7-8 week flower period. when doing a perpetual grow it only makes sense because w/ clones your guaranteed females every time:smokebuds:establishing a clone mother is crucial tho, preferably not from fem seed:no:all tho i have, and been both devastated and rewarded. imo, photo's are for beginners.

auto's are a little harder because you are on a time clock and every day is crucial:Dwe all have stunted our far share of auto's, even the experienced growers. simple mistakes such as ph can cause lock out and stunt your plant:booya:where as a photo can recover and go on to become a tree. once you get comfortable w/ an auto strain:dance2:you know what and how she likes it, then you will succeed. not every strain eats the same and so it some times becomes a guessing game as you look for deficiencies or burns:firedevil:i made the mistake of feeding a indica dom auto the same as a sativa dom auto...the sativa was a pig and i burnt the indica. like i said tho, once you dial in a strain it becomes likclock work, 1,2,3, easy...enjoy!
