Lighting Big sm0's - helpful DIY cob grow light build.

I e watched a few videos and been following posts. I was waiting on the LED price to drop before buying another. The results of COB are amazing. I'm really looking for something with more bang for the buck. I don't like using power to create heat then using power to cool the heat I produce, this is the reason I'm looking to build a custom cob light. Only thing I'm unsure about is coverage.

The best way to increase light and lower heat is to increase the lights and lower the amperage powering them. The common cree setup is 3590 cobs @1.4A for 50w 60%light and 40% heat. Citizen cobs make it less expensive to do this. You could run 8 citi@ 700ma and blow the free away. Even at similar wattages the numbers are close to the same. If people think cobs are expensive check out apache tech led lights out. Basically the same thing. High efficiency but in single mono's. That's where cobs step up by putting so many watts into one chip making it so much less expensive to run power and cool.

I was hoping the first few days of the thread being open could attract members and hopefully get them excited for the actual build itself. Them with a recent grow room robbery things were pushed back a little. Anyways once all the parts arrive I will do a full rundown and photo every step and be able to answer any questions you guys may have. Id like to take DIY to the next level and see a lot more outside the box builds here. Angle alum works but indoor lighting options are endless and ideas is what is needed.

This is it as of now and still waiting on things like always. I will get the drivers mounted and hopefully have all the pieces by mid week.

Looking good so far though! Sucks that you got robbed. Hopefully it wont happen again. Im interested to see where you go from here. Looks like a nice build!

My goal is the best light possible for veg. My room is 8x20 and 4x8 of that is veg only for plants up to day 30. I have noticed under a cmh veg light the plants stalled a little when I first introduce them to the amazing amare lights. So my thoughts was the veg light struggles a little and this will hopefully increase growth and time. I have a pretty nice Cree led bar with white and royal blue leds that I wanted to take apart and use as supplemental as well but the chips are on a printed board and can't really take them apart. I'm open for ideas and suggestions as well.

I promise to get this light going soon. The parts are still delayed and been killing me. I have babies to plant soon too!

Found my way over here bro. thread looks good. I don't know why I thought you had finished this light already. Have you been using the Samsung strips yet? I am curious about those maybe for the closet tent vs COB's.....? Your thoughts?

Not yet, I'm busy as shit with work and haven't even made an attempt with the it yet. The new lights I'm building are taking up any free time. Hopefully soon though. I believe the strips are 140lm/w very close to cobs.

@BigSm0 Have you seen the new LED boards that StephenJ and Robincn are talking about? What do you think about those? I trust what Stephen J says because he's the one who let us have the sphere test info that PSU agro put out over on RIU.

But this is all new stuff...........

I haven't looked into it to much but I think it has potential. Cheaper way to mount singles for sure. Stephen is also selling lights at 250 per cob
