I know this is a super old thread, but I’m replying just to let people know that this works very well in an electric pressure cooker as well. I have an Instant Pot and chronic pain, which is why I started using pot. I know that probably makes me “meh” to some people, but whatever. One thing is does make me is someone who is innovative and doesn’t accept someone else’s word for that can’t be done.
On my first grow I had some freebie seeds, so I planted three. Damned Larry (of Larry, Moe, and Curly fame...Curly, I might add, was a grower AND a show-er) turned out to be a male. Guess I shouldn’t have given them boy names, so I moved him into my greenhouse and let him grow. I decided to see if his leaves were worth anything, even though I’d read a gazillion times there is little to no ThC in the leaves.
I also read a million times that pressure cookers don’t work as well as crock pots. Well I’ve made crock pot budder at least 15 times. I like a DIY and to save money, plus my nephew had given me 12 oz of trim when he’d had a big grow because he loves me VERY much, so I had a lot of trim and some decent Dutch Treat buds to make a lot of budder with.
So I didn’t have a lot to lose. I stripped Larry. He had about 40 grams of leaves on him. I got as much pollen as I could as well, although he’d already spilled most of his seed in the greenhouse, making a mess for me to clean little bastard. I added a bit of ABV, but not enough to make a big difference.
I happened to find this post and a few others. So I followed it:
A few modifications:
1. I dried to leaves and removed all the stems for tea. I use my Ninja to chop them all up, and then rinse it with clear filtered water and use that to top off the jars so all the trichs get in there.
2. I did not declarb. I had read different opinions and decided to go without it on this experiment.
3. Used butter on about half and coconut oil on the other half, added a little water to each
4. My butter happens to be homemade, which means it has a higher water content, so next time I’ll reduce it to Ghee first (which I happen to be doing right now as I’m doing a second batch but this time with trim from my final harvest)
Filled pint jars, sterilized, 2/3 full coconut oil with 1/4 of my dried matter
Set the Instant Pot (or whatever brand of electric multi-pot pressure cooker you have) to manual for 20 minutes
Let it run at natural release
Strained with butter muslin, which you can buy on Amazon. A jelly bag works great too. I have one, but it’s gone on walkabout to find itself, I am assuming, because I can’t find it and there are only two of us in this house.
Let me tell you, Larry is legen-wait for it-dary. Yes, he was so amazing I had to make a corny dad joke. Holy crap. I made him into “bullets” I call them. I poured him into little 1/2 tsp servings in a silicon thingy meant for candies. I drop one in my coffee or cocoa and I am done for the night. Even my nearly 300 pound husband is out like a lamp with those (not like sleep, but stoned). He uses them for his arthritic knees. He’s got bad arthritis really young, which sucks hard. He hates to use, but even he’ll say “I think I’m going to need Larry tonight.” Larry is amazing for a good time, and sometimes it no longer invited to do certain things, like join us for s’mores after I ended up giggling so much I was covered in marshmallow.
So I can attest to it working very well, male plants, at least this one, do carry a good amount of THC, and in this case either deoxycarbolization wasn’t necessary due to the process, or maybe if I HAD de-carbed, Larry would literally put me on the moon.
This next batch is going to be made into caramels (I have some ghee made with trim from Gorilla Glue [HASHTAG]#4[/HASHTAG]) and then I’m not sure what else.
Oh and my percentage was what I normally use, about 10 grams of dried matter to 100 grams of oil and top off with water. This is by weight, not volume.
