Hi all,

New to indoor growing and trying to get the soil right!! I have:

- Jiffy peat plugs for seeding (organic coir & sphagnum)
- Canna Terra Professional
- General Organic Soil Mix bag (sphagnum, compost, EWC+organic bits)
- Dolomite Lime
- Micohrrizal Fungi (Root Grow)
- Agrafeed organic mix (alfalfa, comfrey, seaweed)
- Perlite
- Organic worm casts
- Epsom salts
- Blackstrap molasses
- High P bat guano

THE PLAN:

I do jot have much time to cook a recipe together, so I was going to mix it anyway and put about 30-50% at the bottom of the pot, then fill the rest up with standard Canna Terra and/or organic soil. The rest of the mix will go and cook for round two! :)
I was going to start the seeds in organic jiffy's and, as soon as roots were visible, place the jiffy directly in a little hole left for it in the pot.

QUESTIONS:

1. If I mix 50% organic soils, 30% perlite, the rest a mixture of 1tbs or 1cup of organic additives, do you think that will be too strong for my bottom half of the pot?

2. Is the idea of using a jiffy straight into the cannaterra/organic soil (not the recipe compost!) silly? Am I better planting directly in the canna. My thinking was the roots will get a little more developed in the jiffy before hitting the soil?

Any advise much appreciated! :)

I will also need help in selecting strains from my little stash! :))))

Mmm...had a look at more organic forums posts....not much action in here, guess most go hydro or aero nowadays!! Each to their own :)

Well to answer your first question I guess it depends on how much of what exactly will make that Single cup of hard ingredients.,but if you mix them average and mellow you should be fine with that if you wanna layer with it.

I personally dont like peat plugs, especially for autos.root riots work well but Ive found they can be sometimes to hard for them to unfurl from easily.I like their seedling mix or that and black gold seedling mix mixed together really work well too.but maintain the moisture in the plugs n you prolly be fine.Ive just had a few bad dealing with em is all.:Sharing One:

Hi Eyes on Fire,
many thanks for the reply!! I have decided to abbandon the jiffy's - I c most use them no probs, but the more experienced growers always shy away - if they are not moved, neither will I:)

I shall resort to mother nature doing her thing. Also, have decided to go with 4..even that might be cramped!! :-/

While I still remember, this is the recipe:

2 gal canna terra professional
1 gal perlite
1 gal EWC
Ground egg shells (14eggs)
160g Agrafeed (comfrey, alfalfa, seaweed)
60g spent coffee
500g bat guano (1-10-1)

Want to add 4-6 tbls dolomite lime and 4tbls epsom salts, but these have not arrived yet....worth hanging on for them? Or will I be ok adding these through teas?

Thoughts and any tips for changes to be made much appreciated!

The epsom salts you can water in with a molasses and meet most plant cal/mag needs. But the dolomite lime you might need to add and let rest for a while to allow for the soil to adjust. So wait on the dolomite until your second go round but I wouldn't add it late.

Oh and I really like the mix mine is very similar but I add kelp meal and neem cake. Good luck in your grow.

Longbottom,

thanks like mad for the info! Will sulphured molasses in a small dose be ok? I do have unsulphured, but they will be here thursday. I want kelp too, but could only find seaweed at a decent price. I will prob add to teas as I go along :)

The courier literally just popped round after i read your post...i was nervous as to which of the two had arrived....Sod's Law all over again (sorry, might be a UK thing!! )?? Nope...I got lucky!! i have dolomite lime!! :Cool bud:

Gonna make myself a little...ahem...concentrating help???:Hookah:

And straight off to add lime to my mix, then pot and water!! :) I appreciate it takes time for lime to break down, just I do not have the 2-3 weeks for proper process to complete. Because. I will have a top layer, I am hoping it will have started breaking down when it starts flowering. I am also hoping that the ingredients are balanced - my Ph meter is unlikely to be available for a couple of weeks, so I based it on theoretical values...fingers crossed!!

Was going to leave a top layer of the canna/EWC mix for seedling. I am sure I have read a few people saturate their pots then wait a couple of days and plant??

If you want to move things along you can add some tea with molasses to the soil before planting to get the mycos active then you wont have to worry about the Ph the soil bacteria and fungi will act together with the plant to adjust it self. So sort of jump start the soil life. Any of the dynamic accumulator plants work well for teas in the vegetative cycle like alfalfa, kelp, clover, borage, comfrey, nettles, dandelions etc.

Hi Mate, thanks again!! :) i have watered with molasses and a little alfa alfa...will let everything settle for 23-36 hrs, then they are going under!!! :)

Thanks for the tip on the veg enrichment...need to get me some nettles :)

i'll get a few photos up tommos...-1 to go - YIPEE!!!!:woohoo:
